"On Friday, the 3rd of October 1851, a violent storm hit a fleet of 200 to 500 sailing ships, mostly from New England, that were fishing for mackerel along the North shore of Prince Edward Island. Before the storm had abated, on the 5th of October, 74 to 80 sailing vessels had been driven ashore, or had been destroyed at sea, with a loss of between 150 to 160 lives. This storm is remembered as the "Yankee Gale", as most of the vessels lost were American."
