The vessel is reported to have been destined for N.S., and changed course due to a storm, possibly wrecking off the shores of P.E.I. The family settled in New Glasgow, P.E.I. Thanks to Sherri MacDonald for the report. Anyone with more information? Note: This cannot be the same Polly which sailed to PEI from 1803 to 1811 as that Polly would have long been out of service by this time. Please do not confuse the two.

* The Castalia was built in 1835 at the Peake yard in Charlottetown. It spent its useful life running to England's Channel coast, and in the fall of 1838, she was driven ashore in Bedeque Bay, and was susequently brought into Charlottetown. After the cargo was unloaded, a trench was dug near Peake's breastwork, she was floated in, then the ground was filled in around her. After this, a roof was built over the deck, and it became known as "Peake's or Noah's Ark"!

The Royal Gazette of May 7, 1839 reports: "The bark Castalia, stranded last fall near Bedeque, and sold on account of the underwriters, was forced off by the ice, with the few hands who had charge of her, about a fortnight since, is now reported in sight of Charlottetown harbour." [ Info from Christine Gorman ]

See Benjamin Bremners Description in "Memories of Long Ago".

While some Newfoundland sailings to P.E.I. are included here, we have information on many more sailings to P.E.I. from other Maritime Provinces, Newfoundland, and to and from Boston, as well as indexes to most RG-9 Customs House Records on our "Ships Page"! I have decided to keep the bulk of these separate to keep this database from getting cluttered by these sailings, and to keep this database primarily for International sailings! RG-9 listings on that page include Maritime, International, and Newfoundland sailings. Maritime Passenger lists on that page will also show the passengers we have come across so far for sailings within the Maritimes. All international sailings from the Customs House and newspaper records we have, have been included in this database.
