The Aliant/Island Tel branch of the Telephone Pioneers of America (Abegweit Branch) is an active group of dedicated individuals who have been involved in many community services. In December 2000, 7900 volunteers from NewTel, MTT, Island Tel, and NBTel pledged 150,000 volunteer hours to worthy community projects for the year 2001, "The International Year of the Volunteer", an increase of 25,000 hours from their prior comittments.
In December each year, they pledge many hours to the "Christmas Daddies Program", a telethon designed to help underprivileged children at Christmas.
In February 2000, Aliant Pioneers were presented Awards of Appreciation as part of the Computers for Schools' recent 1999-2000 Annual General Meeting in Ottawa. In that year alone the Aliant Pioneers gave $100,000 in funding and in-kind support to the program which refurbishes surplus computers into strategic resources for education.
These are only a few of the many programs that local Pioneers are involved in. They are a special group of energetic, devoted people offering a menu of options that span the broadest spectrum of educational, environmental, human services, health and life enrichment programs.
