Generation No. 1
1. JAMES1 WAUGH1 was born Bef. 1783 in Unknown-Possibly Yorkshire, Roxburyshire, Dorsetshire, England/Scotland or New York1, and died Aft. 1821 in Read's Corner, Prince Edward Island1. He married RACHEL TOWNSEND1, daughter of JAMES TOWNSHEND and ELIZABETH. She died in Read's Corner, Prince Edward Island1.
Notes for JAMES WAUGH: "AN ISLAND REFUGE" pg 305:
"James Wharf, as his name was written on the Muster Roll dated July 26, 1784 in Charlotte Town, arrived on the Island of Saint John from the Loyalist town of Shelburne in Nova Scotia along with other Loyal Refugees and disbanded soldiers bound for Bedeque Harbour. One account says that James was of Scottish descent, another that he was a Yorkeshireman. Yorkshire borders the Lowlands so perhaps he was both. No information is available to tell how long he lived in the Thirteen Colonies before sailing from New York to Shelburne.
James' land grant of 300 acres was dated August 4, 1784, fifty acres were in Lot 19 on Wilmot Creek and near the boundary line between Lots 19 and 25. He settled there before he moved to what is now Read's Corner. The Wilmot Creek property is presently owned by the Simmons family. The remainder of the grant, 250 acres, was inland between Lots 19 and 25 on the Blueshank Road in Wilmot Valley where a descendant, Brian Waugh, and his mother, Mrs. Audrey Waugh, live.
James Wharf (sic) was head of a household of seven in 1798; he and his wife Rachel, three males under 16 years and two females under 16; possibly John, Samuel, Alexander, Margaret and Elizabeth (Eliza) and they had at least four more children. James' wife, Rachel Townshend, was the daughter of James Townshend and his wife Elizabeth, who settled at Park Corner in 1775. They were passengers on the ill-fated vessel, "Elizabeth" which was wrecked in 1775 in Richmond Bay.
In 1809 James Waugh, farmer of Bedeque, Prince County and Rachel, his wife, conveyed to Margaret, their daughter, one hundred acres on Lot 19. John signed his name but Rachel made her mark as would the majority of women living in the early 1800s. That same day, 24 August 1809, James and Rachel conveyed the same amount to their daughter Eliza Sillicar (sic), wife of Strang Silliker. Eliza paid five shillings for her one hundred acres. John Barnard, Margaret's future husband, was witness to both transactions.
Research has failed to disclose further information regarding this Loyalist, except that the land records reveal he was alive on April 30, 1821 when he assigned one hundred acres on Lot 19 to James Hillson. Fifty acres of this was land originally granted to Loyalist Lawrence Barrett and bought by Waugh at a sheriff's sale."

Notes for GABRIEL STRANG: "THE WRIGHTS OF BEDEQUE, VOL.1" pgs.71-72
"Ann and Gabriel were first cousins once removed. Their marriage was the first legal marriage performed by a minister in Bedeque after publishment of banns. The original law of the colony confined the marriage ceremony to the clergy of the Established church but licenses were issued by the Lieut. Governor directing a chosen justice of the peace to perform the ceremony according to the rites of the Church of England if the contracting parties did not wish to have the ceremony performed by the Church of England clergyman in Charlottetown. At that period there was also an Anglican clergyman in St. Eleanor's.
The year before they were married, Jun 24, 1831 Gabriel bought one hundred acres in Searletown for 25 pounds from Horatio and Isabella Mann, the proprietors of Lot 27. May 5 1840 he bought another one hundred acres. He was a farmer, and the owner of a saw mill on the West Branch of the Dunk River which ran along his back fields. A road led from the main Searletown road to the mill and thence through the woods to Middleton.
He was one of the early postmasters in Searletown. In 1862 the post office in his house was receiving mail twice weekly, Tuesday and Friday, by coach from Charlottetown. The Searletown Methodist Church was built that year and Gabriel was a member of the trustee board. He had succeeded his father in 1836 on the trustee board of the little Methodist chapel in Bedeque and had been on the board when the new one was dedicated in 1849."
