Families in the Congregation of Belfast, Nov. 1st, 1889

This document is an 1889 survey of the congregation by Rev. Sinclair of St. John's Belfast Church. The book was found by Ernest MacLeod of Flat River, P.E.I. among the papers of Mrs. R. A. MacKenzie. Ernest took a copy of the book in to the Prince Edward Island Museum and Heritage Foundation in 1996. About that time, a copy was given to Donna Collings, and with permission given by Ernest a month ago, she has passed it along to be shared. I have transcribed the document over the past few days, and hope it will be of use to Belfast researchers.

Nearly one week ago, Ernest passed away, and I hope that this will serve as a tribute and memorial to his life. Copied from the May 24, 2002 Island Register Newsletter:

"Ernest Junius MacLeod (July 24, 1925 - May 22, 2002)

It is my sad duty to announce the death of Ernest Junius MacLeod, which occurred May, 22, 2002 at 2:30 p.m. at the King's County Memorial Hospital.

Any one of you who may have done extensive Belfast research will likely have run across Ernest. During his lifetime, Ernest worked to preserve and make available a number of historical documents such as this. During his lifetime, Ernest developed a 58,000 person database of Belfast residents, which is being donated to the St. John's Presbyterian Church. Ernest was a prominent member of the church, one of the foremost genealogists and historians of the Belfast district, a long time member of the Belfast Historical Society and a founding member of the PEIGS. Ernest was also the coordinator for the Belfast Historical Society of the reconstruction of the Acadian cemetery at the Lord Selkirk Park. See: https://www.islandregister.com/oldacadian2.html

Ernest was never online, but nevertheless, managed to help many through the years. Ernest was the son of the late Junius Apheus MacLeod and late Margaret Isabel (nee McKenzie) of Pinette. Ernest gallantly fought a long battle with cancer and is at rest now.

"At the Kings County Memorial Hospital, Montague, on Wednesday, May 22, 2002, of Ernest MacLeod of the Glashvin Road, in his 77th year.

Beloved husband of Edna (Nee Nicholson). Dear Step Father of David (Mary) Gillis - Charlottetown, Anne (Chris) Penny - B.C., and Ralph (Lori) Gillis - Cornwall. Loving Grandfather of 9 Grandchildren. Also survived by his Mother-In-Law Mildred Nicholson. Predeceased by his brother John and his sister Isabel.

Resting at Ferguson's Montague Funeral Home until Saturday, then to St. John's Presbyterian Church for funeral service at 2:00 pm. Interment in the Belfast Cemetery.

Visitation : Friday 2 - 4 & 7 - 9 pm. If so desired, memorials to the Belfast Cemetery Fund would be appreciated."

Monday night, Jan 5, 1891 - Went down last night to tell John Murchison that a dispatch had just come stating that the brig Lantana* had been lost on St. Mary's, Newfoundland, with all hands. Capt. Angus, his son, and Alexander, his son, first mate, both drowned. Angus was about 32. His body came ashore.

[*Note: While the original text included 3 question marks after the vessel name, through the Ships and Seafarers of Atlantic Canada database, it has been possible to confirm that the vessel's name was indeed Lantana. She was owned by Malcolm McDonald and Lewis John Westaway of Georgetown, and wrecked with the loss of all hands in early 1891 in St. Mary's Bay, Newfoundland.]
