1. Ewen1 Ross was born in Isle of Skye, and died Bef. 1803 in Isle of Skye. He married Nancy Gillies. She was born in Isle of Skye, and died Aft. 1803 in Belfast.
Notes for Nancy Gillies:
Nancy Gillies Ross and all her children but one daughter sailed on the " Polly " to Prince Edward Island arriving in August 1803 at Belfast.Ewen Ross had died on the Isle Of Skye previous to the rest of the family sailing for Canada.They settled in or around the Belfast area. Nancy died some time after arriving on PEI and is buried either in the Belfast Cemetery or in the Old French Cemetery near the entrance to the Lord Selkirk Provincial Park. There is a monument inside the Park commemorating the arrival of the Ross Family to Prince Edward Island.

6. John2 Ross (Ewen1) was born 1780 in Isle of Skye, and died March 4, 1813 in Flat River. He married Mary Nicholson 1803 in Married on the ship "Polly" in Halifax Harbour.
Notes for John Ross:
John was murdered by John and Samuel Nicholson outside his home. The Nicholsons were relatives of his wife. They were sentenced to death and were hung on May 13 , 1813.The story of the murder is found in the book " In the Shadow of the Gallows" written by Jim Hornby. The story has also been featured in "The Island Magazine".

At Vernon River, on the 24th ult., after a short illness, Ann Ross relict of the late John Furness, in the 91st year of her age, deceased was born in the parish of kilmure Inveneness-shire Isle of Skye, Scotland, and emigrated to this Island in the ship Polly in the year 1803. She was highly respected by those who knew her. Taken from the Patriot, June 2 1877 page 2.

John Furness was the first member of the Furness family to come to PEI. He arrived in 1808 and settled briefly at Murray River and the moved to Vernon River Bridge.His tombstone reads that he was born in 1783 at Kendal ,Westmoreland England.In the history of Vernon Bridge 1998 it states that John Furness built the "first wooden bridge he named "Stavely" after a bridge in his native England.

Notes for Thomas J Furness:
By the passing away of Thomas J. Furness, late of Vernon, whose tragic death has been already referred to in the press, the community and province have lost an estimable friend and citizen.
The late Mr. Furness by his genial and kindly disposition endeared himself to all who knew him. He was for many years connected with the Department of Customs and Excise and here he displayed those same gentlemanly qualities which mad him the friend of all. He was also a very efficient farmer, and here to his efforts were crowned with success-having at the time of his demise, one of the finest properties in that section of the country. Though, at the time of his death, in his seventy- fifth year, yet he was beloved by old and young alike.
The late Mr. Furness leaves to mourn his loss the following sisters: Mrs. Wellington Hume of Iris, Mrs. Duncan Mathieson, Vernon River and Mrs. Anthony Johnson of McDougall's New Brunswick. Also one daughter, Mrs. Albert Drake, Millview, and two sons, George W.C. of Toronto and Wilfred L. on the homestead at Vernon, besides a large number of more distant relatives and friends.
The funeral, which was very largely attended, was held on Thursday, September the 5th, and was conducted by his pastor, Rev. Henry Pierce, assisted by Rev. Mr. Grant of Winsloe and Rev. Mr. Campbell of Pownal. During the service Mrs. George R. McLeod sang very effectively "My Ain Countree". The pallbearers were Messrs. W.A. Jenkins, Osbert Enman, J.J. McGillivary, A.J. Henry, Wallace Drake and D.J. MacDonald.

SAD ACCIDENT- Thomas J. Furness of Vernon River Bridge has received a wire from Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, conveying the sad news that his eldest son Edison had been killed on the railway there by being crushed between two cars. Deceased, who was only twenty-one years of age has been in the West for two years, where he was salesman with the large wholesale manufacturing concern of Snyder & Co. He leaves to mourn sorrowing parents, two brothers and two sisters, who have the sympathy of the community in their bereavement. the reamins will be brought home for interment. FUNERAL TODAY- The remains of the late Edison Furness who was killed on the railway in Portage La Prairie arrived in Charlottetown yesterday, and were taken to Vernon River Bridge for interment. The funeral will take place there today at 2 p.m., from the residence of his father ThomasJ.Furness.
