He was known as "Uncle John" and was killed in Boston, Oct. 1911, he tried to stop a run away horse, but was dragged to death in the process, his grand-daughter, Mrs. Duncan McCarthy of San Diego, California has the medal which he was rewarded with for forfeiting his life, it was given by the Massachusetts Humane Society. His family got nothing out of his efforts and Nora was left a widow with a child to support, in the days before Social Security or any other support. Nora opened a small neighborhood grocery store in one room of her home and managed to survive on that for several years. John had become an American citizen on Sept 30, 1904 and at that time a spouse automatically became a citizen too, so Nora became a US citizen also.
This information is contained in a letter from Barbara McCarthy (grand-daughter) of San Diego, California, see the letter in the Robertson file.

She was born Jun 21, 1878 in Goshen, Henderson County, Texas, USA1, and died Oct 31, 1965 in Summerside, PEI1.
Notes for WILLIAM ELTON ROBERTSON:
The Robertson's lived on the farm of Grandfather John McLean Robertson who willed the 83 Acre farm in Cavendish to Elton, with the stipulation that Elton look after his Grandmother Isabella. When the farmhouse burned down the only things that were recovered were the Family clock, which now belongs to William Ernest Robertson, and is being kept for him by Tom Offer, the organ was also saved and later made into two tables, one is owned by Frances Offer, daughter of Elton, and the other by Enid Boekema, daughter of late Janet Mill, daughter of Elton. The other two legs of the organ were given in payment to the maker of the tables for his labour. Grandfather, "Pa", Robertson moved to Summerside from Cavendish in 1913 and ranched at St. Patricks Ranch on the Pope Road in St. Eleanors, in 1920 he became a mail courier for Sherbrooke and Travellers Rest retiring in 1940.
He then looked after horses for Elmer Offer, husband of Frances, that were used for Milk delivery for Ideal Dairy and the horses were housed in a barn, since torn down, on St. Stephen Street, behind the Guardian Office. Pa loved horses and was an expert horseman, we have a photo of him on a cart with one of his horses.
He taught Tom, grandson, son of Frances, how to swear and one time Pa told Tom to tell Mr. McKenna, who operated a bakery in the old Agricultural Building that used to be on Central Street, that he was a "Dirty Son of a B----". Tom ran up to Mr. McKenna and said "Pa said to say you were a Dirty Son of a B----". Needless to say Mr. McKenna chewed out Pa.
"pa" was a mail carried for the Travellers Rest area and we have the Renewal contract for 1937 on file, in the Documents binder in my Library. He was 66 at the time.

Notes for MATTIE SNOW MACKENZIE:
The name "Snow" in Nannies name came from the Doctor who delivered her. I remember the times that Tom and I used to go out to Louthers in Bedeque to visit Nannie, she was always a sharp old lady and if the paper was hidden she would say "What's going on that they won't let me read the paper". When we told her that we were getting married (Me being a Catholic and Tom a Presbyterian) Nannie laughed and said "And what does McKay (Pronounced McKie/Presbyterian Minister) think of that. Nannie loved her "Spoonful" of brandy before bed and Tom and I took her a bottle about every month and it was not until after her passing that we found out that other relatives were doing about the same so Nannie had more than a Spoon before bed. Just before her death she was in the hospital with pneumonia and the Nurse went into her room one night to find her sitting up in a chair. "What are you doing in that chair, you'll have to get back in bed", "No" said Nannie "I'm not getting into that bed as I can't sleep with all that crackling and I haven't had my Brandy" (Nan was in an oxygen tent and they were like a huge plastic bag around the bed and they did crackle). I remember the night Nannie died, Tom, Paul and I were having supper at our apartment on Granville St. and Paul dropped his knife and it landed in his milk glass, handle down, and no milk spilled and the glass didn't break. Right away I turned to Tom and said "Someone in your family is going to die tonight", this was my Irish upbringing - fore runners they were called. It was just a half hour later that Tom's Mom phoned to say that Nannie had passed away.

We've recently had the bottom of the clock refinished as it was drying out from age. It not sits in the corner of our living room and is a cherished memento of the Robertson era. I remember one time we were parked at the A & W at the corner of Water Street and McEwen Road, which is now a mall with the original Kitchen of the building being a Restaurant, and Elton started to play his recorder..really loud and the recording was of a reported storm coming to the area with 5 to 6 feet of snow expected, but it was the middle of July at the time and the heads in the other cars sure turned.

Elmer was a Butter Maker by trade and worked for Perfection Foods in Charlottetown before moving to Summerside in 1937 to open "Ideal Dairy". He ran the dairy at 20 Central Street until his sons bought him out in 1973, Tom and Paul ran it for 5 years, then Paul changed careers and Tom continued to operate the "Dairy" until 1988 when it was sold. The building remained in the family until 1993 when it was sold. Mother continued to live there until 2000 when she moved to an apartment on Linden Avenue.
The building burned on May 1st, 2001 and the next night again caught fire and completely gutted the structure, it was later torn down and is now a vacant lot (Feb. 25, 2003)

Notes for THOMAS GEORGE OFFER:
Tom worked for his father at Ideal Dairy until 1969 when we moved to Truro where he was employed with Brookfield Foods as Production Manager and where our son Jay was born. When his brother phoned in 1973 with a plea for help, and considering that Brookfield Foods was amalgamating with another company it was decided to sever ties and return to PEI. We ran the business side by side until the we sold out in 1987 to Jack Simmons, of Perfection Foods, which later went Bankrupt. Tom worked for 4 years for Cavendish (coincidently at the same time Rita was working there) as a Shipping Supervisor for 3 years and Production Planner until he left in 1995. Tom also at this time decided on a career change and entered Holland college at the age of 54 and took Aviation Maintenance and graduated with a degree 18 months later. He is presently employed at Atlantic Turbine Inc., in Hangar 8 (you guessed it at the same time as Rita was employed across the hangar) at Allied Signal/Honeywell, in Slemon Park. After the initial probation period he was placed in the Inspection Department and is currently in the "Bearing Room", and if he doesn't approve of the Bearing then it doesn't go back into the engine. He works on PW 100, PT 6 and a new line is being introduced in the fall of 2001. [Offer.fbk.FBC.FBK.FTW]

Notes for RITA MARIE O'CALLAGHAN:
Rita has worked in the Accounting and Secretarial field most of her life and the most rewarding being with husband Tom and Ideal Dairy for 17 years. She spent 3 years as Construction Secretary/Accounts Clerk with J. D. Irving during the construction of an addition to Cavendish Farms and then at their WasteWaterTreatment Plant. Then it was off to Strait Crossing Inc., to build Confederation Bridge as Payroll Officer until the strain threatened health. After some regrouping it was decided to change career plans and was hired as a Wiring Harness Technician with AlliedSignal, in Hangar 8 at Slemon Park, in 1996, but again stress on the job caused that to cease in March of 2001 and as of this writing I am devoting my time to Genealogy Research. Notes for THOMAS JAY OFFER:
After graduating from High School Jay worked for a time at Cavendish Farms and then off to Toronto to work for an Overhead Garage Door Installation Company until thoughts of "injuries" (several other fellow enployees experienced these injuries) plagued his thoughts and he returned home to PEI. After some thought he entered Holland College in 1994 and graduated from their Aviation Maintenance Degree and was unable to obtain work immediately so he accepted employment with Strait Crossing as their Hydraulic Equipment Maintenance Operator, until a call in December of 1995 gained him employment with Atlantic Turbine Inc., where he worked until the illness of Daughter Alycia caused too many emergency trips to Halifax and they were unsympathetic to his problems and they parted ways. After helping Kathy with her "baby sitting" service they decided to alter their careers and Kathy finished her Human Services course in 1999 and they are now the proprietors of "Kiddin' Around Day Care" and in Sept. of 2001 hope to add to that with the opening of a "Kindergarden School". Very strict rules and regulations govern the care of other persons children and both Jay and Kathy are continually upgrading their education in this field.
