Descendants of Hugh MacLeod, Sr. (The Elder)
This information was accumulated during research of the John MacLeod and Kenneth MacLeod family.
I do not have a direct connection with this family, although, they did inter-marry with our families in later generations.
Generation No. 1
1. Hugh2 MacLeod, Sr (Cloid1) was born Abt. 1770 in Islandhall, Durness, Sutherlandshire, Scotland, and died July 25, 1845 in PEI. He married (1) Marian MacKay November 19, 1793 in Durness, Sutherlandshire, Scotland, daughter of Hector MacKay and Margaret (MacKenzie). She was born Bef. September 22, 1773 in Durin, Durness, Sutherlandshire, Scotland, and died Bef. July 1827 in PEI. He married (2) Nancy MacKay July 25, 1827 in New London, PEI. She was born Abt. 1808, and died May 13, 1869 in PEI.
Notes for Hugh MacLeod, Sr:
Elizabeth and Ann of New Castle - passenger list
Hugh MacLeod age 36, wife Marion, age 30, along with daughters Hughina (10), Margaret (2), and Catherine (1) sailed on the 'Elizabeth and Ann' in 1806 along with the families of John MacLeod and Kenneth MacLeod from Thurso, Scotland in November of 1806. They all came together from the Parish of Durness, Sutherlandshire, Scotland and all settled in New London area. Hughs connection to John MacLeod and Kenneth MacLeod is unknown at this time.
LDS Pedigree File- 1206518-0603103104937 Compact Disc #65 Pin #40992 submitted by Joyce Parsons and also her website at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jandjroots (under MacKay family)
Joyce's file appears to concentrate only on Hugh and his early family. There is no mention of either a John or Kenneth MacLeod within the related time-frame or with the same father, BUT - it is interesting to note that Hector MacLeod's records do indicate that John MacLeod was also of 'Island Hall'.
Hugh MacLeod (Fisher and Boatman) was married to a Marian MacKay on 19 Nov 1793. In this file Hugh's father is shown as Cloid MacLeod (born c1740) at Islandhall, Tongue, Durness, Sutherlandshire, Scotland.
Church records of the Margate Circuit (LDS Film #1630118)
A record was located that may be for this Hugh MacLeod and a 'Margaret' MacKay with a marriage date of 29 November 1794. It is uncertain if the record is for this couple for sure, due to the difference in name of wife, date of marriage and the dates of birth of children listed, but it is possible (we do know there have been transcription errors in other entries). Additional children and dates of birth shown in that record have been included here.
The will transcribed below is believed to belong to this particular Hugh MacLeod. It appears that by 1843, his first wife Marian has died and he has remarried as he now mentions 'infant' sons James & Hugh. Daughters Hughina, Margaret and Katherine are not mentioned in the will. It's possible they are deceased or married by this time and it was not felt that they needed to be provided for. No grandchildren have been mentioned.
In an LDS record a marriage of a Hugh MacLeod to Nancy McKay, July 25, 1827 is found. The author is s unknown and therefore cannot be verified, but Hugh does mention his wife Nancy in his will, so it is assumed the LDS record is for this Hugh MacLeod.
Buried next to this Hugh MacLeod in Yankee Hill Pioneer Cemetery is a Nancy, wife of Hugh MacLeod, who died May 13, 1869. This appears to be this Hugh MacLeod's wife (see notes for Nancy MacKay)

Notes for Nancy MacKay:
Yankee Hill Pioneer Cemetery
Tombstone at Yankee Hill hard to read - year of death may be 1867 instead of 1869.
It has long been popularly believed that the tombstone at Yankee Hill inscribed with 'Nancy Wife of Hugh McLeod died May 15 1867(69?) Aet. 76' belonged to Nancy Burke, wife of Col Hugh MacLeod.
I do not think this is the case. I believe this stone is for the wife of Hugh MacLeod the Elder for the following reasons:
- The tombstone is physically situated beside that of Hugh MacLeod, the elder.
- We know that Hugh, the elder's wife, as mentioned in his will was named Nancy.
- As evidenced by his will, Col. Hugh MacLeod's wife, Nancy Burke, was deceased prior to Jan. 21 1866 and therefore, this stone could not be for her
Children of Hugh MacLeod and Marian MacKay are:
2 i. Christian3 MacLeod, born Bef. June 11, 1794 in Islandhall, Durness, Sutherlandshire, Scotland; died Bef. November 1806 in Durness, Sutherlandshire, Scotland.
Notes for Christian MacLeod:
It is assumed Christian died young as she is not among the children listed on the 'Elizabeth and Ann' passenger list.
Baptismal record shows parents as:
Father: HUGH MAC LEOD OR MAC DHOLICLEOD
Mother: MARION MAC KAY OR NIN ACHIN MAC DHOLICNEIL
FHL Durness Par Reg 941 B4SR V38 gives father Hugh MacLeod, alias macdholicloid, fisher and boatman in Islandhall, and Marion Mackay, alias nin achinmacdholicneil

Notes for Hughina MacLeod:
Elizabeth & Ann:
Passenger transcripts have child listed as 'Hugh', male age 10.
LDS Website - Parish registers, 1764-1854 Church of Scotland. Parish Church of Durness, Sutherlandshire
Baptism record shows name as 'Hughina' and a female.
Joyce Parsons' website has the following information under name of 'Hugh':
FHL Durness Par Reg 941 B4SR V38 gives father Hugh MacLeod, a little tenent in Saingobeg, presently private in the R.F., and Marion Mackay (no sex of the child is mentioned), but her Pedigree File lists child as 'Hugh' and a male.
Until proven otherwise, this child has been listed as a female (as per baptism record).

Generation No. 2
8. George3 MacLeod (Hugh2, Cloid1) was born January 06, 1816 in New London, PEI, and died May 21, 1874 in PEI. He married Barbara Cole Abt. 1844 in PEI. She was born 1819 in New London, PEI, and died June 07, 1873 in PEI.
Notes for George MacLeod:
A son George is mentioned in Hugh MacLeod, The Elder's will of 10 Feb 1843.
Note in Geddie Memorial Church speculates that perhaps Hugh MacLeod, The Elder, was the father of the George MacLeod who married Barbara Cole.
Another possibility is that George was the son of Hugh MacLeod and Nancy Burke. This would not appear to be the case, as Hugh MacLeod did not name a son George in his will of Jan 21, 1866 (he appeared to provide for all his living children).
Geddie Memorial Cemetery transcript - Stone #55
George and his wife Barbara are interred here next to Hugh MacLeod and his wife Marion Wall (Stone #56) - presumed to be another son of Hugh, The Elder.
Stone #57 shows George and Barbara's son, Henry S MacLeod buried with his son William.
Due to the proximity of the graves, it could be assumed that George and Hugh are therefore half-brothers and the sons of Hugh MacLeod, The Elder.
George has therefore been included here as Hugh MacLeod, The Elder's son.
Children of George MacLeod and Barbara Cole are:
+ 12 i. James Hume/Hugh4 MacLeod, born December 07, 1845 in New London, PEI; died November 04, 1917 in PEI.
+ 13 ii. Isabella Cole MacLeod, born November 06, 1847 in New London, PEI; died August 27, 1927 in Springbrook, PEI.

+ 18 vii. Emmeretta MacLeod, born Abt. 1861 in New London, PEI; died Unknown.
11. Hugh3 MacLeod (Hugh2, Cloid1) was born December 12, 1829 in French River, PEI, and died April 24, 1917 in PEI. He married Marion Wall Abt. 1864, daughter of James Wall and Susanna Adams. She was born March 04, 1843 in Sea View, PEI, and died July 17, 1881 in PEI.
Notes for Hugh MacLeod:
Noted as an 'infant' in father Hugh's will Feb. 10, 1843. This would then make him a child of father's second marriage to Nancy MacKay.
This Hugh MacLeod is included here for informational purposes. A note in Geddie Memorial Church speculates that this is the same Hugh MacLeod that married Marion Wall.
Geddie Memorial Cemetery transcript - Stone #56
Hugh's date of birth is shown as Dec 12, 1829. His wife Marion Wall is buried in the same plot. If this birthdate is correct, Hugh would have been about 14 at time of fathers will. This may be classified as an 'infant' for legal purposes.
1881 Census for Lot 21, PEI
Only one Hugh MacLeod family (#188) fits this family, with the exception that Hugh's age is shown as 45 (date of birth c1836) instead of the date of birth on tombstone. Marian is recorded as 'Misey' (on LDS CD) or 'Mary?' (paper transcript). She is age 37 (c1843/44) which would agree with the date of birth on the tombstone. Hugh and Marion were both born in PEI.
Their children are Hugh J (16), Eliza J (12), Elizabeth A (9), Jessie (7) and George (5) and all were born in PEI. The children in the census fit the family of Hugh and Marian as described in the History of Spring Valley and in the Descendants of Thomas Addams file on the Island Register.
Children of Hugh MacLeod and Marion Wall are:
+ 19 i. Hugh James4 MacLeod, born January 14, 1865 in French River, PEI; died August 14, 1935 in Spring Valley, PEI.
20 ii. Eliza J MacLeod, born Abt. 1869 in PEI; died Unknown.
+ 21 iii. Elizabeth A MacLeod, born September 23, 1872 in PEI; died 1948 in PEI.
22 iv. Jessie MacLeod, born Abt. 1874 in PEI; died Unknown.
23 v. George MacLeod, born Abt. 1876 in PEI; died 1955.
Notes for George MacLeod:
The Descendants of Thomas Addams file has this George marrying Elizabeth Graham (the daughter of William Graham and Elizabeth 'Bessie' Graham) on Aug 29, 1872. This is incorrect as George was not born until c1876.
Generation No. 3
12. James Hume/Hugh4 MacLeod (George3, Hugh2, Cloid1) was born December 07, 1845 in New London, PEI, and died November 04, 1917 in PEI. He married Margaret Jane Sudsbury Aft. 1881, daughter of John Sudsbury and Mary Profitt. She was born September 07, 1860 in Fermoy, PEI, and died April 22, 1951 in PEI.
Notes for James Hume/Hugh MacLeod:
Geddie Memorial Cemetery transcript - Stone #383
Name is shown as James HUGH McLeod with date of birth as Nov 22, 1847 and date of death as Nov 4, 1917. He is buried with his wife Margaret Jane Sudsbury, date of birth Dec 7, 1860 and date of death Apr 22, 1951. This date of birth for James differs from an LDS Ancestral File and from census record.
Notes for Margaret Jane Sudsbury:
Geddie Memorial Cemetery transcript Stone #383.
This is presumably for the same Margaret. Transcription indicates date of birth as Dec 7, 1860 and date of death as Apr 22, 1951. This conflicts with date of death provided by other sources.
Margaret is buried with her first husband James MacLeod.
Children of James MacLeod and Margaret Sudsbury are:
