McKinnon Family of Lot 55

Information on the McKinnon family is based on family lore, and research is in the preliminary stages. I have cited sources when information has been proven correct, yet, much is still unproven. This report is meant as a research tool only, in the hopes that the reader will make additions, corrections and deletions. I hope to spark interest in fellow McKinnnon researchers, even if it is to inform me of my incorrect assumptions!

This branch of the McKinnon family is referred to as "The Melrose McKinnon's". Donald McKinnon received title to acreage in Lot 55 near Boughton River Road and Melrose Road, thus the origin of the Melrose McKinnon's. A booklet titled "A Genealogy and Personal Family History of My Mother's Ancestors The Melrose McKinnons" was written by Wilfred MacDonald in 1975. Much of the information contained in this genealogy was taken from this booklet, which is based on family stories handed down from one generation to the next.

First Generation

1. DONALD ALOYSIUS ¹ McKinnon was born in Scotland 1793. Donald died 10 March 1871 in Melrose, Kings County, PEI, at 77 years of age. His body was interred in St. George's Cemetery, Kings County, PEI.

He married JANNET MACDONALD (Wilfred MacDonald., A Genealogy and Personal Family History of my Mother's Ancestors The "Melrose MacKinnons" (1975) ). Jannet was born in PEI 1797. Jannet died 16 Dec 1881 at 84 years of age. Her body was interred in St. George's Cemetery, Kings County, PEI ( LDS #1487743 St. Georges Cemetery ,). She was listed as a resident in the census report in 1881 Melrose, Grand River.

Donald Aloysius McKinnon and Jannet MacDonald had the following children:

2. FRANCIS X ² McKINNON ( Donald Aloysius ¹ ) was born in Melrose, Grand River, Kings County, PEI (Wilfred MacDonald., A Genealogy and Personal Family History of my Mother's Ancestors The "Melrose MacKinnons" (1975) ).

He married MARY C MCAULAY . Mary was born 1843.

He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1881 Melrose, Grand River. Francis was a Farmer.

Francis X McKinnon and Mary C McAulay had the following children:

i. ISABELLA ³ was born in Melrose, Grand River, Kings County, PEI. Isabella died 23 Dec 1934 in Yakima, Washington. Isabella was a Nun. Sister Xavier of the Sacred Heart.

ii. MARY was born in Melrose, Grand River, Kings County, PEI.

iii. JANNET was born in Melrose, Grand River, Kings County, PEI 1873. She was listed as a resident in the census report in 1881 Melrose, Grand River.

iv. DONALD J was born in Melrose, Grand River, Kings County, PEI 1875. He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1881 Melrose, Grand River. Donald was a Priest. Reverend Donald McKinnon was pastor of St. Michael's Church in Livermore, California.

v. ELLEN ELIZABETH was born in Melrose, Grand River, Kings County, PEI 23 Aug 1876. Ellen died 7 Jan 1938 in Everett, Washington, at 61 years of age. She was listed as a resident in the census report in 1881 Melrose, Grand River. Ellen was a Nun. Sister Angela entered the Sisters of Providence in Montreal in 1902.

vi. WINCELUS (WINNIE) was born in Melrose, Grand River, Kings County, PEI 1878. Wincelus died 3 August 1941 at 63 years of age.

vii. WILLIAM R was born in Melrose, Grand River, Kings County, PEI Aug 1881. He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1881 Melrose, Grand River.

3. DANIEL A ² McKINNON ( Donald Aloysius ¹ ) was born in Melrose, Grand River, Kings County, PEI (Wilfred MacDonald., A Genealogy and Personal Family History of my Mother's Ancestors The "Melrose MacKinnons" (1975) . Daniel immigrated and made his home in San Francisco, California.

He married KATHERINE MACDONALD .

Daniel A McKinnon and Katherine MacDonald had the following children:

i. LOUISE ³ . Louise became Sister Mary Emerentiana, Mount Carmel Convent, Dubuque, Iowa.

ii. AUGUSTINE . He became Brother V. Leo, a Christian Brother. He taught at St. Mary's College in Moraga, CA.

iii. ELIZA .

11 iv. WILLIAM B was born July 1865.

v. ALOYSIUS JOHN was born 29 April 1870. Aloysius died 1934.

4. CECELIA ² McKINNON (CECILY) ( Donald Aloysius ¹ ) birth date unknown.

She married WILLIAM ARCHIBALD MACDONALD .

Cecelia McKinnon (Cecily) and William Archibald MacDonald had the following children:

i. JOHN ANDREW ³ . John Andrew became a doctor.

ii. CATHERINE MARIE CLEMENTINA .

iii. MARY ELIZA was born 1858.

iv. JANET was born 2 July 1860. Janet died 31 Dec 1940 at 80 years of age. Janet became a Nun.

v. DONALD BERNARD was born Aug 1862.

vi. WILLIAM ALBERT was born 1865. William died 1959 at 94 years of age.

vii. CECILY CATHERINE was born 1866.

viii. JOSEPH RUDOLF was born 1869. Joseph died 1964 at 95 years of age.

5. ALEXANDER ² McKINNON ( Donald Aloysius ¹ ) was born in Melrose, Grand River, Kings County, PEI 1819 (Wilfred MacDonald., A Genealogy and Personal Family History of my Mother's Ancestors The "Melrose MacKinnons" (1975) ). Alexander migrated to California in 1890 and made his home in San Rafael. His body was interred in St. Mary's Cemetery, Oakland, CA.

He married MARY MORRISON . Mary was born in Nova Scotia 1829 ( 1881 PEI CENSUS ,). Mary died 13 Nov 1902 at 73 years of age. She was listed as a resident in the census report in 1881 Melrose, Grand River.

Alexander McKinnon and Mary Morrison had the following children:

i. JOHN FRANCIS ³ was born in Melrose, Grand River, Kings County, PEI 1852. He married MARY FRANCIS CORBIRT 4 July 1880.

ii. JANET was born in Melrose, Grand River, Kings County, PEI 1853. Janet died 23 May 1867 in Melrose, Grand River, Kings County, PEI, at 13 years of age.

iii. WILLIAM DANIEL was born in Melrose, Grand River, Kings County, PEI 1858. William died 24 Sept 1902 at 44 years of age. He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1881 Melrose, Grand River ( 1881 PEI CENSUS ,). He was baptized in St. Georges Church, Kings County, PEI, 1 Aug 1858. William was a Priest. During the Spanish American War William enlisted as Chaplain of the First Regiment of California, Volunteer Infantry. When in the Philippines, he served with such outstanding devotion and distinction, that the people of San Francisco erected a statue in his honor in Golden Gate Park. A book "Military History of Chaplain William D. McKinnon" by Brother V. Edmund McDevitt was written about Father McKinnon .

iv. ANABELLA was born in Melrose, Grand River, Kings County, PEI 1861. Anabella died 13 March 1943 in Reno, Nevada, at 81 years of age. She was listed as a resident in the census report in 1881 Melrose, Grand River ( 1881 PEI CENSUS ,). Anabella was a Nun. Sister Bernadette

v. BERNARD JAMES was born in Melrose, Grand River, Kings County, PEI June 1865. Bernard died 22 Jan 1926 at 60 years of age. He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1881 Melrose, Grand River ( 1881 PEI CENSUS ,). Bernard was a Priest. Pastor at St. Angustines Church in Oakland, California.

vi. FRANCES was born in Melrose, Grand River, Kings County, PEI 1866. She married GEORGE YOUNG .

A census listed Frances as head of household in 1881 Melrose, Grand River ( 1881 PEI CENSUS ,).

6. ANGUS ² McKINNON ( Donald Aloysius ¹ ) was born in Melrose, Grand River, Kings County, PEI 22 May 1822 (Wilfred MacDonald., A Genealogy and Personal Family History of my Mother's Ancestors The "Melrose MacKinnons" (1975 ). Throughout his life, Angus , remained on the family farm and died 22 July 1891 at 69 years of age.

He married MARGARET McDONALD . Margaret was born in Vernon River, Queens Co., PEI 1826. Margaret died 18 Jan 1921 at 94 years of age. She was listed as a resident in the census report in 1881 Melrose, Grand River. Margaret is the sister of George McDonald.

He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1881 Melrose, Grand River.

Angus McKinnon and Margaret McDonald had the following children:

i. JOHN JOSEPH ³ was born in Melrose, Grand River, Kings County, PEI 1863. He married KATHLEEN McPHEE .

iii. ALEXANDER J was born in Melrose, Grand River, Kings County, PEI 1867. He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1881 Melrose, Grand River.

v. JANE was born in Melrose, PEI 1873 (Wilfred MacDonald., A Genealogy and Personal Family History of my Mother's Ancestors The "Melrose MacKinnons" (1975) ). She married RONALD JOHN MACDONALD .

She was listed as a resident in the census report in 1881 Melrose, Grand River.

vi. WINCESLAUS was born in Melrose, Grand River, Kings County, PEI 15 Aug 1874 (Wilfred MacDonald., A Genealogy and Personal Family History of my Mother's Ancestors The "Melrose MacKinnons" (1975) ). Winceslaus died 2 July 1955 at 80 years of age. He married MARY BURGE 1908.

He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1881 Melrose, Grand River.

vii. GEORGE VENCENTIA was born in Melrose, Grand River, Kings County, PEI 8 Aug 1876 (Wilfred MacDonald., A Genealogy and Personal Family History of my Mother's Ancestors The "Melrose MacKinnons" (1975) ). George died 1964 at 87 years of age. He married KATHERINE DHU .

He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1881 Melrose, Grand River.

7. CATHERINE ² McKINNON ( Donald Aloysius ¹ ) was born in Melrose, Grand River, Kings County, PEI 1824. Catherine died 21 Aug 1875 in San Francisco, CA, at 51 years of age. Her body was interred in Calvary Cemetery, San Francisco, California, then moved to Holy Cross Cemetery, in Colma, CA (Holy Cross Cemetery Records).

She married MORRISON .

Catherine McKinnon and Morrison had the following children:

i. JONAS J ³ .

ii. JOHN V was born in PEI 1849. John died 21 Aug 1875 in Virgina City, Nevada, at 26 years of age (Holy Cross Cemetery Records). His body was interred in Calvary Cemetery, San Fransicso, California then moved to Holy (Holy Cross Cemetery Records).

8. J.J. ² McKINNON (JOHN) ( Donald Aloysius ¹ ) was born in Melrose, Grand River, Kings County, PEI Mar 1828 (Wilfred MacDonald., A Genealogy and Personal Family History of my Mother's Ancestors The "Melrose MacKinnons" (1975) ). J.J. arrived in San Francisco in 1852 and was a partner in the lumber firm of Preston & McKinnon. J.J. died 12 Feb 1896 in San Francisco, CA, at 67 years of age.

He married SARAH M in San Francisco, CA, c. 1856. Sarah was born in London, England 1833. Sarah died 27 Nov 1908 in Menlo Park, CA, at 75 years of age. Her body was interred in Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma, California.

J.J. McKinnon (John) and Sarah M had the following children:

i. JAMES CASINI ³ was born in San Francisco, CA 1857.

ii. ELLEN TILLIE was born in San Francisco, CA 1 April 1859. Ellen died 17 Dec 1936 at 77 years of age.

iii. LEONIDE was born in San Francisco, CA Mar 1861. Leonide died 11 Dec 1926 in San Mateo, CA, at 65 years of age.

iv. FRANCIS EUGENE was born in San Francisco, CA 1863. Francis died 10 Nov 1888 at 25 years of age. His body was interred in Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma, California ( Holy Cross Cemetery Records ,).

v. JOHN LOUIS was born in San Francisco, CA 1865. John died 29 July 1919 at 54 years of age. His body was interred in Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma, California ( Holy Cross Cemetery Records ,).

vi. ALFRED was born in San Francisco, CA 1874. Alfred died 11 Jan 1927 at 52 years of age.

vii. FANNIE was born in San Francisco, CA 1875. Fannie died 21 Apr 1967 at 91 years of age.

9. CLEMENTINA ² McKINNON ( Donald Aloysius ¹ ) was born in Melrose, Grand River, Kings County, PEI 1834 (Wilfred MacDonald., A Genealogy and Personal Family History of my Mother's Ancestors The "Melrose MacKinnons" (1975) ).

She married DOUGALD McDONALD .

Clementina McKinnon and Dougald McDonald had the following children:

10. JAMES JOSEPH ² McKINNON ( Donald Aloysius ¹ ) was born in Melrose, Grand River, Kings County, PEI 1843 (Wilfred MacDonald., A Genealogy and Personal Family History of my Mother's Ancestors The "Melrose MacKinnons" (1975) ). James died 23 Feb 1907 at 63 years of age.

He married ADELE D'CASTRO-RAFINO in San Francisco, CA. Adele was born in Spain (Wilfred MacDonald., A Genealogy and Personal Family History of my Mother's Ancestors The "Melrose MacKinnons" (1975) ).

James Joseph McKinnon and Adele d'Castro-Rafino had the following children:

i. DONALD ³ was born in San Francisco, CA.

ii. MARY PETRONILA was born in San Francisco, CA 1880. Mary died 23 Sept 1884 at 4 years of age. Her body was interred in Calvary Cemetery, San Francisco, California, then moved to Holy Cross Cemetery, in Colma, CA (Holy Cross Cemetery Records).

iii. LEO J was born in San Francisco, CA 5 May 1881. He married CLAUDINE ZABALDANO .

iv. JUANITA was born in San Francisco, CA 1883. Juanita died 5 Dec 1887 at 4 years of age. Her body was interred in Calvary Cemetery, San Francisco, California, then moved to Holy Cross Cemetery, in Colma, CA (Holy Cross Cemetery Records).

v. J.J. was born in San Francisco, CA 26 Sept 1886. J.J. died 27 Sept 1886 at less than one year of age. His body was interred in Calvary Cemetery, San Francisco, California, then moved to Holy Cross Cemetery, in Colma, CA (Holy Cross Cemetery Records).

Third Generation

11. WILLIAM B ³ McKINNON ( Daniel A ² , Donald Aloysius ¹ ) was born July 1865. William died 28 June 1937 at 71 years of age. His body was interred in St. John's Cemetery, San Mateo, CA .

He married twice. He married JUANITA . He married CATHERINE MALEY . Catherine was born in California 1876. Catherine died 12 Nov 1920 at 44 years of age. Her body was interred in St. John's Cemetery, San Mateo, CA .

William B McKinnon and Juanita had the following child:

i. MERCEDES ⁴ was born 1896. Mercedes died 27 Mar 1917 at 20 years of age. Her body was interred in St. John's Cemetery, San Mateo, CA.

William B McKinnon and Catherine Maley had the following child:

ii. BERNICE was born 1908.

12. MARGARET ³ McKINNON (MAGGIE) ( Angus ² , Donald Aloysius ¹ ) was born in Melrose, Grand River, Kings County, PEI 4 Mar 1866 (; and Wilfred MacDonald., A Genealogy and Personal Family History of my Mother's Ancestors The "Melrose MacKinnons" (1975) ). Margaret is deceased. Her body was interred 1946 in St. Mary's Cemetery, Souris, Kings County, PEI.

She married HUGH JOHN MACDONALD circa 1891. Hugh was born in PEI 1 Nov 1857 . Hugh was the son of John Macdonald (Old John) and Mary . Hugh is deceased. His body was interred 1924 in St. Mary's Cemetery, Souris, Kings County, PEI. He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1881, 1891, 1901 Greenvale.

Margaret McKinnon (Maggie) and Hugh John Macdonald had the following children:

13. HENRIETTA ³ McKINNON ( Angus ² , Donald Aloysius ¹ ) was born in Melrose, Grand River, Kings County, PEI 1871 (Wilfred MacDonald., A Genealogy and Personal Family History of my Mother's Ancestors The "Melrose MacKinnons" (1975) ). Henrietta died 28 April 1962 at 90 years of age.

She married HUGH JOSEPH MACDONALD (Wilfred Mac Donald, A Genealogy and Family History of the MacDonald's ,). Hugh was born in Greenvale, Kings County, PEI 1863 (Wilfred Mac Donald, A Genealogy and Family History of the MacDonald's ,). Hugh was the son of Joseph Macdonald and Mary McIsaac . Hugh died January 1946 at 82 years of age (Wilfred Mac Donald, A Genealogy and Family History of the MacDonald's ,). He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1881, 1891 Greenvale. Hugh 's occupation: Farmer.

Henrietta McKinnon and Hugh Joseph Macdonald had the following children:

v. HELEN was born in Souris West, Kings County, PEI 19 August 1901 ( A Genealogy and Family History of the MacDonald's ,). She married ALPHONSUS MACDONALD .

vi. CHARLES RODERICK was born in Souris West, Kings County, PEI 10 September 1902 ( A Genealogy and Family History of the MacDonald's ,). He married ANN .

vii. MARION was born in Souris West, Kings County, PEI 10 January 1904 ( A Genealogy and Family History of the MacDonald's ,). Marion died 10 May 1920 in Souris West, Kings County, PEI, at 16 years of age.

viii. JANET was born in Souris West, Kings County, PEI 5 July 1905 ( A Genealogy and Family History of the MacDonald's ,). Janet died 2 July 1972 at 66 years of age.

ix. MARGUERITE was born in Souris West, Kings County, PEI 1 November 1906 ( A Genealogy and Family History of the MacDonald's ,). She married CHARLES McMAHON .

16 x. HENRIETTA was born 24 May 1908 ( A Genealogy and Family History of the MacDonald's ,).

xi. FRANCIS was born in Souris West, Kings County, PEI 28 November 1910 ( A Genealogy and Family History of the MacDonald's ,). Francis died 28 August 1970 in Souris West, Kings County, PEI, at 59 years of age.

CELIA was born in Souris West, Kings County, PEI 14 May 1912 ( A Genealogy and Family History of the MacDonald's ,).

Information on the fourth, fifth, and sixth generations has not been published, in the interest of privacy.
