The Descendants of Alexander Spreck MacDonald and Catherine MacDonald

Generation No. 1

1. ALEXANDER SPRECK1 MACDONALD was born 1789 in Kilmuir Isle of Skye, and died November 30, 1868 in Green Marsh Bellevue PEI. He married (1) CHRISTY GRAY/GRAHAM. She died Bef. 1820 in Isle Of Skye. He married (2) CATHERINE MACDONALD Bef. 1820 in Kilmuir , Isle Of Skye. She was born 1798 in Scotland, and died July 5, 1877 in Green Marsh Bellevue PEI.

Notes for ALEXANDER SPRECK MACDONALD:

Alexander MacDonald and his wife Catherine MacDonald , both natives of Kilmuir Isle Of Skye emigrated to Prince Edward Island in 1841 with their family. They arrived on the ship " Washington " from Liverpool , England.

Alexander's first wife was a widow of a MacLeod and had one son by him named Donald. She was Christy Grey or Graham.

Alexander married second Catherine , a distant relative of his own. On arriving on PEI their family consisted of six children , three sons and three daughters. A son Roderick was born a year or two after coming to PEI.

This information was taken from notes made by their descendant, Donald Beverley MacLeod of New York City prior to his death in 1987.

A reference to the name "Spreck" appears in the "Masters Wife" by Sir Andrew MacPhail page 122-123. "In that community, surnames fell into disuse. They were so few that they were useless for purpose of definition...... another had suffered from small-pox, and he was known as Breac, the spotted one, which is also the word for trout; and that name transformed into Spreck is still used to designate his family."

This family was always known in the Bellevue area as the Spreck MacDonald's.

He married (2) CHRISTY CAMERON March 16, 1864. She was born July 12, 1834 in Cameron's Island Point Prim, and died December 1, 1920 in Bellevue.

Notes for ALEXANDER MACDONALD:

In the passing of Mr. Alexander McDonald, Bellevue has lost one of its oldest-settlers, a successful farmer who has built up a fine home, as well as assist a large family to careers of usefulness. Mr. McDonald was born in the Isle of Skye, Scotland, July 5th, 1833, and emigrated with his parents to P.E. Island in 1841, who settled in Murray Harbor Road district. He was married in 1859, to Flora McDonald, who died after a brief married life, leaving one daughter Flora, who resides in Somerville, Mass.

In 1864 Mr. McDonald was united in marriage with Christy Cameron, of Pond River. To this union were born nine children, Dr. A.C. , of Warsaw; Indiana, Christy, wife of A.J. McLeod, Kinross; Alexander B. of Butte, Montana; Reverend Ewen of Leaskdale, Ontario; John C. of Point Prim; Annie, wife of J.A. Gillis, Kinross; Catherine, wife of John A. McDonald and Donald, both of Cuthbertson, Montana, and Roderick, who resides at home in Bellevue.

Mr. McDonald was one of eight children. One brother, Roderick and a sister, Mrs. John McPhee, both of Bellevue, survive the deceased, Also his wife and ten children.

Mr. McDonald was a kind husband and loving father, solicitous for his children's welfare and happy in their successes. He was a true Christian and loyal member of the Presbyterian Church of Valleyfield for many years. He was active for his years till July last, when he became bedfast and gradually wore out, patiently waiting the end with Christian fortitude and submission to the will of God.

On the forenoon of November 11th, at the age of 81 years, conscious to the last, in his home at Bellevue surrounded by his faithful wife and three of his children, after his last words to his son: "you have been good to me. Weep not. I am going to a better place," he fell asleep "Blessed sleep from which no one wakes to weep."

The funeral service, which was largely attended, was held at the home at 1 o'clock, Friday, conducted by Dr. McEwen. The remains were interred in the family burying ground, Valleyfield, there to rest "until the day dawns and the shadows flee away."

Notes for CHRISTY CAMERON:

There entered into rest prepared for the people of God on December the first at Bellevue, Christy Cameron, wife of the late Alexander McDonald.

Mrs. McDonald was born at Cameron's Isle, Point Prim on July 12th, 1834. She was one of a family of ten children of whom two survive her, Captain Alex Cameron of Charlottetown and Mrs. Allen McDonald of Pinette. She was married on the 17th, of March 1864. A family of nine children were born to this union all of whom survive her viz:- Dr. A.C. of Warsaw, Indiana; (Christy), Mrs. A.J. McLeod, Kinross; Alex. B., Butte, Montana; Reverend Ewen of Leaskdale, Ontario; John C. of Point Prim; (Annie), Mrs. J.A. Gillis, Kinross; (Catherine), Mrs. J.A. McDonald and Donald of Culberson, Montana and Roderick C., in the old home with whom she lived, and from whom she received the most unstinted kindness till the last. This family, also (Flora) Mrs. Eagles of Boston, a step daughter who loved her as her own.

She was a woman who began life with her husband in pioneer days. But with supreme courage, and an optimism that remained with her through the years, she radiated good cheer, and inspired both husband and children towards successful careers.

She was a living exponent of Christian hospitality and true neighborliness.

Intensely active and alert physically, she was about almost to the last, although her memory was impaired. But on the evening of December the first she fell asleep. "Blessed sleep from which no one wakes to weep".

Reverend J.A. McLennan, Valleyfield, where she was a member for many years conducted the funeral service in the home, assisted by the Reverend Dr. McEwen of Orwell. The interment was in Valleyfield Cemetery beside her husband.

Notes for DR. ANGUS C. MACDONALD:

On Sunday at 6:25 pm death claimed Dr. Angus Cameron McDonald, who had been critically ill at his home on S. High St. since his return from the Mayo hospital, Rochester, Minn., where he was accompanied by Dr. C.C. Dubois several weeks ago for examination and operation. Death was caused by cancer of the stomach.

Dr. McDonald was outstanding in his profession. Coming to Warsaw immediately following his graduation from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1892, he took over the practice of Dr. R. Parks White upon his arrival here on May 11 of that year. This young physician at once plunged into his life work, and town and county was soon to know the mettle and ability of Dr. McDonald. He answered all calls day or night and his reputation in his profession grew as the years passed.

For forty years he worked assiduously in ministering to the ills of the people of the community and was an outstanding physician as well as a leading citizen. About twelve years ago Dr. McDonald retired from the active practice and then gave his attention to the management of his extensive realty holdings and business and residence properties. In 1916 he and the late John D. Widman built the Centennial Theater building. Also to this outstanding citizen goes the credit of establishing the first hospital in Warsaw, located on S. Indiana St. for many years Dr. McDonald served as city physician for the railroads. He was a member of the American College of Surgeons, a former president of the Ind. State Medical Assn., and a former member of the State Bd. of Health.

Dr. McDonald was always identified with movements calculated for the welfare and uplift of the community, and his absence will be felt by a host of our citizens, He was first president of the baker Boys club and took deep interest in our civic affairs. Also he was the first Warsaw physician to provide himself with an auto in the infancy of that industry, and which was later to become a conveyance necessity for all. He was a member of a Rotarian and a member of the Elks and Masonic lodges.

Dr, McDonald was born in Prince Edward Island, located at the mouth of the St. Lawrence River in Canada on January 20, 1865. He was the eldest of a family of ten children, six boys and four girls. Those surviving: Roderick McDonald (Belleview, PEI), John McDonald (Point Prince, PEI), Mrs. Christie MacLeod, Mrs. John Gillis (Kimross, PEI), Mrs. John McDonald (Andes, Montana). Three brothers and a sister are dead. In 1932 Dr. McDonald married Mary L. Gray at Russellville, Ky, who although now in a critical condition, survives her husband. His previous marriages were to Belle McCarter and to Mrs. Edith Synder Webb, both deceased.

Funeral services were to be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Presbyterian Church, by Rev. Arthur W. Raabe, the local pastor. The body is at the Paul M. Bilby funeral home where friends may call. At 1 pm Tuesday the body will be taken to the church. The casket will not be open at the church. Burial will be in Oakwood. (From the Warsaw newspaper "The Times Union".)

The Baker Boy's Club, is still active today. A Memorial Fund, created by Dr. Angus before his death enabled worthy and needy Kosciusko County students to obtain a college education. His sister in law, Lucy Maude Montgomery, describes him in her Journals as being " A truly remarkable man".
