Arthur Marks became a U.S. citizen June 1,1891.He home steaded a 160 acres up the Yachats Valley. He cleared the river bottom by hand and fire it was all big timber up to elven feet threw. Those many years of toil did not weaken his stamina and lived to be 101 years old. Two miles upriver, Arthur Marks homesteaded in 1875. Mr. Marks although of small statute, could pack a tremendous load. The cleared is farm by hand through patients and hard work. Some of the creeks in the area are named after the homesteadeds their is a Marks creek flowing through his property. Arthur Marks is listed on the 1900 Census as being 39 years age, and a stock raiser from Canada. His wife, Evelyn, was from Missouri. About this time Arthur Marks settled on the place still known by that name. Some of those days were very high trying for the pioneers. Once for about six weeks, there was a flour famine. It did not become really serious, however, for the principal diet was meat, which was always plentiful. Deer, there, and elk have always been the most numerous game animals. Arthur Marks always was a good hunter, and the country being more then, it was easier to find game. With lots of berries and other food, the animals got very fat, and were not wild. It was not any trouble for a hunter to go out the first of the week, and return the last of the week with his Indian Pony loaded with jerky. As there was no payroll in the country the settlers had to depend on their guns mostly for a living.

He went back to Canada and fished on the West Coast of Vancover Island. He was appointed lightkeeper September 6,1919 at a salary of $936.00 per year.At Nootka Lightstation.

He was in good health till he passed away. He was reading the newspaper and fell head first into the paper and onto the floor. He had most of his teeth, and didn't need glasses to read the paper. He raised turkeys on his daughters farm, up till two years before he passed away. His death is recorded on his death certificate and newspaper clipping.
