The Larter Families of PEI
Descendants of John Larter and Charlotte Clow
Apr 3, 2011
This review has been prepared by Robert Ewart Butler, a descendant of John Larter and Charlotte Clow who lived in PEI in the early 1800s.
Any additional information or corrections would be very welcome at: [email protected]
A. Summary and Conclusions
This review is based on:
- PEI Public Archives and Records Office (PEI PARO) Birth and Baptism Records at: http://www.gov.pe.ca/archives/baptismal/search_index.php
- Larter histories from the Island Register at: https://www.islandregister.com/index.html , especially the following Family Lineages:

- Census Records
PEI, Massachusetts, Minnesota and Manitoba
- Larter family histories from other descendants of the family. In particular the author would like to thank Beverly June (Larter) Jones and Robert Allan Larter of Minnesota for their assistance.
An Outline Descendant report for John Larter and Charlotte Clow which summarizes the family connections is appended. The number of descendants in this report is as follows.
- First Generation - John and Charlotte
- Second Generation - 6 children of John and Charlotte
- Third Generation - 44 grandchildren
- Fourth Generation - about 100 great grandchildren
- Fifth Generation - several great great grandchildren.
This list likely includes all of the children and grandchildren of John and Charlotte. The fourth generation is probably almost complete for children named Larter who are descendants of John (1834-1923), George Herbert (1837-1905) and Samuel (1838-1919). (This review was started to track down all the people named Larter on PEI, not necessarily all the descendants of John and Charlotte ). The fifth generation has probably only a small fraction of the great great grandchildren of John and Charlotte
There are 89 Larters listed in the PEI Birth and Baptism records.
A search of census records on Ancestry.ca results in 156 Larters. There were 43 Larters in the 1881 census, 27 in 1891, 34 in 1901 and 52 in 1911.
All the Larters in the PEI Birth and Baptism records, and all the Larters in the PEI census records up to and including 1911, and all the Larters in the family histories on the Island Register, are direct descendants of John and Charlotte, or their spouses. There is direct proof for most of them, and reasonable evidence for the rest.
As far as the author could determine, most of the information in the family history files are accurate. The difficulty is that there is almost no source information.
All the Larters in this review, and the source documentation to prove their connections, are listed in the "Butler Family Tree" on Ancestry.ca.
The author has concluded that everyone who had Larter ancestors on PEI up to and including 1911, is related to every other descendant and everyone in this report.
B. Review of Information Sources
First Generation.
John and Charlotte's names and birth locations are given in the death record of their son George Herbert Larter in Minnesota. John's birth year of about 1810 was recorded in: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mnrrvn/Larter-John.html. The original source of this date is not known, but it seems reasonable based on the year of his marriage to Charlotte Clow. There is a baptism record for Charlotte in IGI record IGI 5016919, submitted by a member of the LDS church. A photocopy of their original marriage record shows they were married 31 Mar, 1834. No death or burial records have been found for either of them, but it appears that they were both recorded in the 1848 census for New Bedeque Rd, Lot 31. The 1861 census lists Mrs. Larter and a male between the ages of 45 and 60. There are some Land transactions recorded for John Larter in 1834, 1836, 1841 and 1842, including a sale of 50 acres to George Clow in 1841.
Charlotte's father George Clow prepared a will 14 Feb 1859, which was probated in Dec, 1860. At that time he was living in Lot 31, PEI, most likely in N. Wiltshire, most likely near John and Charlotte Larter. The witnesses to George's will were Samuel Larter and George Larter, probably the sons of John and Charlotte who were aged 22 and 21 at the time. It is possible that John's sons witnessed the will instead of John because John had already died.
Second Generation
The story: "The Descendants of George Clow and Rachel Crouch", by Miriam Neill, on line at https://www.islandregister.com/clow1.html has a great deal of information about the second generation of the Larter family, most of which has been confirmed independently by this author. File clow1.html lists 6 children of John Larter and Charlotte Maude Clow as follows.
- John Larter, born 26 Aug, 1834
- George Herbert Larter, born 18 Mar 1837
- Samuel Larter born 1839
- Caroline Larter born 30 Aug 1841, married to James Comeford
- William Larter born 12, Aug 1844
- James Larter born 1846, died 1933
The descendants of George Herbert Larter in Minnesota have the same list of 6 children of John Larter and Charlotte Clow.
The PEI PARO Birth and Baptism records confirm the birth dates for John, George Herbert, Caroline and William.
The fact that both George and Samuel Larter will are witnesses to George Clow's will makes it likely they are related. Samuel and William are both listed in the 1880-1881 Tears directory of Charlottetown as boot and shoe makers, and both lived on Kent St. This association makes it more likely that they were related than not. The story "The Descendants of George Weldon and Leah Jacobs Wight", by Gary Carroll, at: https://www.islandregister.com/weldon1.html, has a great deal of information about Samuel Larter and his descendants, much of which has been confirmed by this author. File weldon1.html lists the parents of Samuel Larter as John and Charlotte, and gives his birth date as May, 1939. There are several records for Samuel Larter in PEI including census records, which confirm his age.
There are several records for James Larter in Massachusetts which confirm his age and birth in PEI. There are 2 marriage records for James, both of which identify his parents as John and Charlotte. He is listed in the 1933 and 1935 directories for Framingham, Hopkinton Massachusetts.
Third Generation - Eleven Children of John Larter (1834-1923) and Mary Tredenick (1822-1913)
Some records have different birth dates and spellings for Mary Tredenick. This spelling and birth date has been chosen to match the inscription on her gravestone in the Highfield cemetery. According to family records, John Larter and Mary Tredenick were married 8 Oct, 1853.
The PEI PARO Birth and Baptism records list 8 children of John Larter and Mary, including Agnes (born 17 Mar, 1850), Thomas William (17 Feb 1854), Charles Alfred (1 Oct, 1855), Francis Randolph (31 Oct, 1856, baptized 10 Feb, 1858), Frederick George (9 Nov, 1864), Melinda (29 Sept, 1866), Albert Hammond (5 May, 1868) and Emily Edith (9 May 1871).
There is also a baptism record for an unnamed Larter child, with parents Mr. and Mrs. Larter, on 22 Apr, 1859. The 1859 Larter baptism was at the same church and by the same minister as the baptism of Francis Randolf on 10 Feb, 1858. The 1859 baptism was likely for John Larter, born between Feb 1858 and Apr 1859. Family records from descendants of George Herbert Larter show that John Larter and Mary Tredenick had a son John about this time. Also, the 1889-1881 Tears directory of Charlottetown lists both John Larter Sr. and John Larter Jr. as "truckman", and both lived on Pond St. As with Samuel and William, this association makes it more likely that they were related than not. The 1881 census for Charlottetown lists John Larter, age 21, Carter. It is highly unlikely that John Larter Sr was the John born around 1810, because he may have died, and if not he would have been too old to be working as a truckman
The 1861 census lists John Larter, truckman, and wife, both between the ages of 21 to 45. They had 5 children, 1 born in the previous year. The census lists 1 male under 5, 2 males between 5 and 16, 1 female under 5 and 1 female from 5 to 16. This would be a match for John Larter and Mary Tredenick and family, if Francis were mistaken for a female, and if John born about 1859 was listed as born within the last year.
File clow1.html lists 10 children of John Larter and Mary Tredenick, including the 8 children named in baptism records, plus Lavinia Ann Larter (born about 1861) and Mary Elizabeth Larter, nicknamed Minnie (born about 1863). Both Lavinia and Minnie were listed in the 1881 census, and in additional records. File clow1.html does not list John Larter born about 1859.
The burials in the Old Protestant burial include an unnamed Larter child who died in Feb 1858. This may have been a child of John and Mary, because of the date. If so, it could have been Francis Randolph Larter, baptised 10 Feb, 1858, the same month.
Third Generation - Ten Children of George Herbert Larter (1837-1905) and Mary Dammarell (1839-1918)
There is a marriage record for George Herbert Larter and Mary Dammarell on Christmas day in 1861.
The PEI PARO Birth and Baptism records list just 4 children of George and Mary, including Melinda Elizabeth (born 16 Sept 1862), Robert Wellington (23 May, 1864), Frederick Adolphus (25 Feb, 1866), and Ambrose James (born 6 June, 1868, and baptized twice 20th and 30th of Sept, 1868). There are 10 children listed in the family bible, the 4 above plus George Herbert Larter (born 16 Aug 1870), Hattie May Larter (21 Nov, 1872), Ernest Omar Larter (2 June 1876), Gertrude Agnes Hannaford Larter (22 Jan 1879), Vernon Lewis Larter (5 Dec 1882) and Victor Addison Larter (26 Aug 1887)
The information about this family in the file clow1.html is almost completely in agreement with the family bible. The birth certificate for Mary Dammarell shows that she was born 23 July, 1839 in Devonshire, England. Etta M. Larter in file clow1.html should have been Hattie May Larter. The wife of George Herbert Larter born in 1870 was Bertha B. Poe.
Third Generation - Twelve Children of Samuel Larter (1838-1919) and Sarah Jane Weldon (1840-1912)
There is a marriage record for Samuel Larter and Sarah Jane Weldon showing their marriage on 5 Nov 1859.
The PEI PARO Birth and Baptism records list 9 children of Samuel and Sarah Jane Larter. The 9 records are for Emily Leah (born 6 Oct, 1860), George Samuel (25 Dec, 1861), Charles Pearce Weldon (28 July, 1863), Lucretia Jane Young (30 May, 1866), Ralph A.U.I ( 1 May, 1877), Isabella (12 Aug, 1879), Myrtle Maud (10 June 1881), Tairnia Thomson (10 June 1881) and Daisy Pearl Livingston (19 July 1887)
Ralph Aubrey U.I. Larter was actually born in New Brunswick and baptized in PEI. In addition there were 3 other children born in New Brunswick. They were Fanny Gertrude (born 1868), Arthur Ernest (27 Aug, 1871) and Minnie Etta (14 Mar, 1873). The children born in New Brunswick were all confirmed in PEI census records.
There was also a child of Samuel and Jane Larter who died 12 Apr 1865, and was buried in the Charlottetown Old Protestant Burial Ground. This could have been Emily Leah Larter, or another child not listed above.
The family of Samuel Larter and Sarah Jane Weldon are listed in the family histories in both files clow1.html and weldon1.html. The information in these files is largely in agreement except that Isabella is missing from weldon1.html. File weldon1.html lists all the children as being born in PEI.
Third Generation - Three Children of Caroline Larter (1841-1875) and James Comeford (1841- )
The IGI has a death record (source film 960207) for Caroline Larter Cumiford, who died 18 Nov, 1875 in Needam, Massachusetts. The record states she was born in PEI in 1838 of parents John and Charlotte Larter. The 1870 US Census for Newton, Middlesex, Mass lists parents James, Caroline and 2 children. A third child was born in 1875. There is a birth record for the youngest and the oldest. The children were: Jessie (27 Nov 1867), Annie (18 Apr 1870) and James (1 Apr 1875). These records were discovered by R.A. Larter, of Minnesota.
Third Generation - Three Children of William Larter (1844-1920) and Margaret M'Phee (1848- )
The file clow1.html shows that William Larter married Margaret M'Phee. No records have been found to confirm her family name was M'Phee.
The PEI PARO Birth and Baptism records list 3 children of William and Margaret Larter, Mabel Carrie (born 22 Nov, 1875), Helena Katie (26 Apr, 1878) and Annie Maude (8 Aug, 1880) All 3 were baptized on 11 May 1886. The 3 children are listed as Mabel, Lenah and Maud in the 1881 census. They are listed as Mable, Lilla and Maud in the 1891 census, and Mable C, Lena K and Maud A in 1901. It seems likely that William and Margaret only had 3 children, and that Helena Katie, Lena, Lilla and Lena K are different names for the same person.
Mabel listed her name as Mabel Caroline Harris on the birth and baptism record of her daughter Helen Grace. It is possible she was named Caroline after her aunt who had died 4 days before Mabel was born.
Third Generation - Five Children of James Larter (1845-1935?) and Carrie F. Chadwick (1859- )
James Larter emigrated to the USA in 1864. In 1865 he enlisted in Company U, Massachusetts 17th Infantry Regiment. He married Sarah F. Richardson in Rhode Island on 10 Apr, 1865. They were listed together in the US Census of 1880. No records have been found to indicate that they had any children. In 1889, James married Carrie F. Chadwick in Wakefield Massachusetts. There are records to show they had 5 children. There are birth records for Frances May "Fannie" Larter (15 Feb, 1893), and for Marion (9 June 1898). Three other children are listed in US Census records of 1900 and 1910, Edith J. (born Feb 1896), Bertha (Aug 1900) and Ralph C. (1903)
The information about James Larter in Massachusetts was discovered by R.A. Larter in Minnesota.
