The Descendants of John Laraby and Elizabeth Hawley
Generation No. 1
1. JOHN1 LARABY was born 1764. He married ELIZABETH HAWLEY, daughter of MATTHEW HAWLEY and CHLOE BARNES.
Notes for JOHN LARABY:
According to "Saco Valley Settlements and Families" p. 870, "John Laraby whose father was killed in the Revolution married Elizabeth Halley and settled at Cape Breton."
He was one of the earliest Loyalist settlers in the Port Hood-Mabou region of Nova Scotia. He arrived in Cape Breton in 1788 from Massachusetts. John Laraby was an early lease holder in the Mabou area, Holding the lease for the Island (Larraby's Island) now known as Nicholson's Island. that Island and a nearby 84 acre lot were known as Hill Row and were sold to Archibald MacDonald in 1824. (See Mabou Pioneers, pp. 414, 420. John Larraby was then apparently living on Lot 16 on the Southwest Mabou River, a lot which he was granted in 1809.
John and Susan Larraby was probably the John and Susan Laribe listed on the Muster Roll of the Departments of the Army and Navy as being at Chedabucto in 1784.
Perley Smith in "The Smiths of Cape Breton", 1967 p. 215 reports that Elizabeth Hawley married John "Larby" and lived in the Port Hood-Mabou area of Inverness County, Nova Scotia.

She was born Abt. 1816 in Prince Edward Island, Canada, and died February 10, 1887 in Eldon, Belfast, Prince Edward Island, Canada.
Notes for MATTHEW LARABY:
Euphemia (Phemie) Larrabee b. 1881 told Nathaniel (Budd) Larabee b. 1919 that Matthew Laraby was a Roman Catholic and at that time the Catholic Church was in Vernon River (several miles from Eldon). The predominant sect in Eldon at that time was the Baptist Faith. So, Matthew would walk to Vernon on Sunday mornings to attend Mass. At the same time, the Baptist minister, who lived in Vernon, would be walking to Eldon. They met en route one day and sat down to chat at the side of the road. As a result, the Baptist minister must have converted Matthew as he walked back to Eldon and was a Baptist thereafter. This must have happened after most of the children were born since they were christened in the Catholic church at Vernon River.
