When she was young, Catherine was called "Coolie" because of the color of her hair - it matched the color of the collie dog's coat. (It is believed coolie was the old Irish way of saying collie.) When she was about 11 years old, Catherine was swinging from a rope hung from the ceiling of the barn, holding her baby brother, Dan. The rope broke, she was able to throw Dan into the hayloft, but she fell to the barn floor. It is believed that she broke her shoulder (no medical attention was given) because she had a hump on her back for the rest of her life. Catherine was a very talented woman - she made her children's clothes, tatted, knit, crocheted, did open cutwork embroidery and was a wonderful cook. When times were financially rough, she crocheted bedrpreads to pay the rent. Catherine suffered form asthma. She died of blood poisoning caused by stones blocking the common duct (gallbladder/liver problems.)
Jack, like all of the other Gillis males, was musically talented. He was a wonderful singer. He could work magic with wood. When he returned from the sea, he worked in the steel mills for a time, then became a logger in British Columbia.
