Some sources identify the widow of Thomas Euclid Halliday Jr. as Mary DOUGLAS, a relative or perhaps a daughter of Thomas Douglas, Fifth Earl of Selkirk. No definite proof of Mary's origin has been found; the mystery is only heightened by the "veiled references" in an 1815 letter from Thomas Euclid Halliday Sr. to Selkirk. See J. M. Bumsted, ed., "Thomas Halliday, Mary Cochrane..." in The Island Magazine No. 19 (Spring/summer 1986; FHL book 971.7 H25i), pp. 27-32.
In any case, the land deed dated 1819 transferring property in Lot 57, Queens County, Prince Edward Island from the Earl of Selkirk to Thomas Halliday for "the use and behoof of Mary Cochrane the wife of Thomas Euclid Halliday feme sole" identifies her only by the Cochrane surname. PEI land registry conveyance books, liber 26, folio 44, on FHL film 1630046.
"A tombstone in the old Belfast churchyard marks the grave of Mary, daughter of the Earl of Selkirk:-- In loving memory of Mary Douglas, only daughter of Lord Selkirk, died October 1859, Aet. 60. Blessed are the dead, Who died in the Lord. Erected by her daughter, E. McLennan [sic]."-- Malcolm Alexander MacQueen, Skye Pioneers and the Island, Winnipeg, abt. 1930 (FHL film 231919), p. 19. J. M. Bumsted's 1986 article in The Island Magazine on Mary Cochrane includes a photo of this tombstone, but notes that the Earl of Selkirk had daughters from his 1807 marriage.

Although age at death 73 in 1884 caclculates to a birth year of 1811, available sources indicate James Euclid Halliday was born in Scotland shortly before he and his parents arrived in North America in 1810.

Ashfield Township history indicates Alexander moved to Goderich, Huron County, Ontario in 1866, then purchased land in Ashfield Township, Huron County, Ontario in 1868. Ashfield Township history indicates Angus was not married, but 1920 U.S. census for Seattle lists a wife Thyra S., born in Sweden, age 40 in 1920, and 1930 U.S. census for Seattle lists a second wife Elizabeth L., born in Scotland, age 50 in 1930. First marriage for Elizabeth L., took place at her age 49, undoubtedly to Angus Halliday, probably in Seattle. That same 1930 census lists Angus Halliday as age 65, and that his first marriage had been at his age 25, or about 1890, and indicates he came to the U.S. in 1918. However, Ashfield Township Western Division Deeds, vol. 25, no. 7759 indicates Angus was not yet married in 1897 and was then living in Carlton, Carlton, Minnesota.

His death certificate lists Alexander Halliday as a retired funeral director. He was living in Carlton, Carlton, Minnesota in 1897 (Ashfield Township Western Division, Huron, Ontario Deeds, vol 25 no 7759). The 1910 U.S. census of Two Harbors, Lake, Minnesota gives his profession as barber.

No children listed for Addie at the 1910 census of Two Harbors. That census lists both her parents as born in New Hampshire, although place of birth for the "mother-in-law" to Alexander Halliday, Laura (?) MOSES, was listed as Wisconsin. Laura Moses was residing with Alexander and Addie in 1910.

The exceptionally large concourse of people forming the sad funeral procession showed the high esteem in which the deceased was held in his native land and the deep sympathy felt for the sorrow-stricken parents and relatives. He who promises "to wipe all tears form our eyes" is graciously sustaining the broken-hearted parents and family by sweet consolation of his Grace and presence. "Stewart" was a young man of exemplary character and a general favorite. His untimely and cruel death has cast a deep gloom over the whole Province.
