DUNCAN, DONALD and HUGH GILLIS are known to left Brinacory North Morar, Scotland, and emigrated to Saint Jean Island (now Prince Edward Island.) The reason for this emigration is not, as yet, known. It may have been because of the land clearances or it may simply have been to make a better life for themselves and their families. DONALD GILLIS was the indentured servant of John MacDonald. The GILLISES were a part of the Glenaladale Settlers who founded Scotchfort.
Second Generation
2. DUNCAN GILLIS. Born pre 1750 in Brunacory (Brinacory), North Morar, Scotland. He married Unknown in Scotland. DUNCAN was a farmer. Religion Roman Catholic.
DUNCAN GILLIS emigrated from Brinacory, North Morar, Scotland, to Saint Jean Island (now Prince Edward Island), arriving in 1783. It is known that he was accompanied by his brother, HUGH GILLIS. It is believed that his wife and son, DUNCAN GILLIS, also accompanied him, although their names do not appear on the ships lists. He was a part of the Glenaladale Settlers who founded Scotchfort. He settled on Lot 36 with his brother, DONALD GILLIS.
In 1784, DUNCAN GILLIS and his brother, DONALD GILLIS (who preceded him to Prince Edward Island, arriving in 1772) petitioned Governor Fanning for land on Lot 37. Approximately 1800 1805, it is believed DUNCAN GILLIS relocated to Lot 41, the Saint Peters Bay/Greenwich area, to be close to his son, DUNCAN GILLIS. DUNCAN GILLIS and his wife died on Prince Edward Island, Canada.

3. DUNCAN GILLIS. Born in Brunacory (Brinacory), North Morar, Scotland. He married Unknown in Scotland. DUNCAN was a farmer. Religion Roman Catholic.
Although their names do not appear on the ships list, it is believed that DUNCAN GILLIS and his wife accompanied his father, DUNCAN GILLIS, when he emigrated to Saint Jean Island (now Prince Edward Island), in 1783. This is based on the 1798 Head of Household Census for Lot 37, which lists two males 16-60, one female 16-60, and one female 60+ years living in his household.
Approximately 1800 1805, DUNCAN GILLIS moved to Lot 41, the Saint Peters/Greenwich area, where he purchased 50 acres of land, freehold, built a log cabin and cultivated his property. On February 22, 1812, he was appointed to serve as Fence Viewer for one year "in the List of Fence Viewers and Constables Appointed by His Majestys Supreme Court of Prince Edward Island to serve the ensuing year ves Charlottetown, Hillsborough River, Saint Peters"
Although there is no record of a Wills being presented for Probate, it appears that DUNCAN GILLIS willed his property, giving a portion to his daughter, ANN GILLIS, who died unmarried, leaving her share to her sister, MARY GILLIS; and MARY GILLIS, who died unmarried. This is derived from the WILL OF MARY GILLIS, dated May 20, 1847, in which she wills all her interest in the farm (her own share and her sister, ANN GILLIS share) to her nephew, JOHN MacINNIS, the son of her sister, CATHERINE MacINNIS.

Buried in Saint Peter's Cemetery, Saint Peters Bay, Prince Edward Island. Occupation: Farmer. Education: Unknown. Religion: Roman Catholic. For a reason lost in history, AENEAS DUNCAN dropped the AENEAS and added ALEXANDER to his name and was known as DUNCAN ALEXANDER GILLIS. He used the name DUNCAN ALEXANDER GILLIS when he married. For some time, he was a postman, delivering the mail, on horseback, between Charlottetown and East Point.
On 25 Feb 1876 when AENEAS DUNCAN (later called DUNCAN ALEXANDER) was 26, he married ANASTASIA MacDONALD, daughter of John MacDONALD & Christina SUTHERLAND, in Saint Peter's Church, Saint Peter's Bay, Prince Edward Island, Canada. Born on 29 Apr 1845 in Prince Edward Island, Canada. ANASTASIA died in Saint Peter's Bay, Prince Edward Island on 29 Apr 1924, she was 79. Although the cause of death is listed as acute gastroenteritis and shock, it is believed that ANASTASIA died of a myocardial infarction (heart attack). It is also believed that she was a diabetic.
From the Charlottetown Guardian, Friday, May 9, 1924:
" IN MEMORIAM:
On Tuesday night, April 29th, death claimed as its own the spirit of Mrs. Duncan Gillis, St Peters.
The deceased who was in her seventy fifth year, was in apparent good health up to about two hours previous to her death when she was suddenly stricken with acute indigestion. Medical aid was summoned, but of no avail. Strengthened by the oils of Holy Extreme Unction, her soul took its flight to receive its reward.
Mrs. Gillis was endowed with all the qualities of a good Christian woman, and was always ready to lend a hand to anyone in trouble. Her death is therefore a great loss to her friends as well as to her saddened family.
She leaves to mourn besides a sorrowing husband, the following daughters and sons: Mrs. John J. McDonald, Peakes; Mrs. Edward Kesterton, Boston, Mass.; Mrs. Daniel Powell, Roxbury, Mass.; Joseph of Quebec; John and Ronald of Boston, Mass.; James and Paul at home, also one sister, Mrs. William Foley Glochester.
The funeral took place from her home, Saturday morning to Saint Peters Church where a Mass of Requiem was celebrated by her pastor, Rev. A. McAulay, who also officiated at the grave.
The large number that followed the remains to its last resting place, together with the many spiritual bouquets received, were proof of the high esteem in which she was held.
Requiescat in pace."
It is apparent that ANASTASIAs age was reduced by five years. Her actual date of birth according to her Baptismal record from Saint Peters Church, was April 29, 1845, making her 79 years at the time of her death.
ANASTASIA appears to have been the person who started what is almost a tradition in certain branches of the Gillis Family dying on holidays, birthdays or weddings. ANASTASIA died on her own birthday which was also the birthday of her son, JOHN JEROME. Her son, RONALD, died on the day of the birth of his niece, JOHN JEROMEs daughter, BERNICE CLAIRE. JOHN JEROME died on Christmas Eve; his wife, CATHERINE, died on Halloween Eve; his oldest daughter, MARIE, died on the birthday of his youngest daughter, LEONA. In another branch of the family, it seems every wedding which occurs is accompanied by the death of a family member.
They had the following children:
