He married (2) MARY BLANCHE WHITE 24 Jun 1822 in St. Simon & St. Jude's RC Church Tignish, PEI, daughter of MICHAEL BLANCHE & ANNE DELLEY. She was born Abt. 1800 in Ireland, and died in PEI.

Notes for MOSES FOLEY:

Emigrated to PEI approximately 35 years before the potato famine in Ireland so the reason for his emigration to Canada from the Alberton Museum say he arrived in 1816. He is buried in the Pioneer Acadian Cemetery in an area called the Green located in Anglo, PEI. According to church records at St. Simon & St. Jude, Moses was the son of Martin Foley & Marie (Mary) Coggglez(??) Couglin? of County Wexford (entry in the record book was made by French Priest of the time and writing was a mixture of French & English, as well as difficult to read due to age and ink being faded). Found at St. Simon & St. Jude in 2003 by Lynda Ready.

THE FOLLOWING ARTICLE IS FROM: THE "BLACK BOOK"

MARTIN M. FOLEY, who successfully operates a farm at Kildare Capes and also is a successful agent for farm machinery and implements, was born at Central Kildare on the 27th of June, 1864, and is a son of Martin & Catherine (Cahill) Foley. The father was born at the same place in Prince County in 1822 and followed farming and fishing as his life vocations. He died in 1884. To him and his wife were born the following children; Moses, who died in Colorado; Mary, the wife of Paul Gillis, a farmer; Patrick, a farmer at Central Kildare; Catherine, who became the wife of Daniel O'Brien, a trades-man and carpenter in Alberta, Canada; Martin M., subject of this sketch; Margaret, the wife of Joseph A. McPhee, a farmer in De-Gross Marsh, Kings County; Pina, the wife of James McIntyre, a farmer at Montrose, Prince county. the paternal grandfather, Moses Foley, was a native of Ireland and came to Prince Edward Island in an early day, being among the first settlers of this locality. The subject's father was Conservative in politics and in religion a member of the Catholic church.

The subject of this sketch received a good school education and was reared to the life of a farmer. He was the owner of one hundred nine acres of splendid land, sixty-five of which were cultivation, the part on which the residence was located being a part of the old homestead. He gave careful attention to every detail of his business and was very successful. He carried on mixed farming and also combined dairying with his other labors. He was agent for Frost & Wood, of Charlottetown, and handled all kinds of farming machinery, having been successful in placing many substantial orders. He eventually moved to Alberton, where he gave his sole attention to this line of business. In 1889 Mr. Foley married Miss Elizabeth Foley, a daughter of John E. Foley & Bridget (Kinch) Foley, residents of Kildare settlement, who formerly lived in Crapaud. In politics Mr. Foley is a staunch Conservative and in religion a member of the Roman Catholic church at Alberton.

Paulinus Gillis, another of the successful farmers and leading public spirited citizens of Lot 3, Prince County, was born on the old homestead at Montrose, this county, on June 22, 1848 and is a son of John J. Gillis, who was born at Port Hill, Prince Edward Island. He was one of the first settlers at Montrose in an early day and occupied a leading place among the promoters of that section of the Island. The tract of land he first entered was then largely covered by standing timber, but he created from this place a fine farm, which is now occupied by the subject of this sketch (Paulinus Gillis). He was the father of nine children, Philip, Daniel, Katie (deceased), Mary J. (deceased), John, James J, Sarah A, (deceased), Paulinus, the subject of this sketch, Maggie and Lizzie. The father of these children followed farming and lumbering and was successful, owning over two hundred acres of land. He was a staunch Liberal in politics and in religion a Roman Catholic. The paternal grandfather was Finley Gillis, who came from the Isle of Barra, Scotland, in about 1800, being one of the first settlers at Low Point, PEI, where he subsequently followed farming with success.

The subject of this sketch enjoyed the privilege of attendance at the local schools during his youth and received a practical elementary training which he has liberally supplemented during the subsequent years by careful reading and close observation on men and events, so that he is now considered an intelligent and well informed man. He has followed in the footsteps of his honored father (John J, Gillis) and has devoted his active years to tillling of the soil. His present farmstead comprises one hundred twenty acres of land, eighty-five of which he has placed under the plow and which he devotes to the production of all crops common to this latitude. He also gives some attention to the raising of fine draft horses and has produced some magnificent specimens of this breed. His place is fully improved and stands in evidence of the owner's good taste and sound judgment. In politics he gives earnest support to the Conservative Party and in religion is a consistent member of the Roman Catholic church. In August 1883, he married a Miss Mary Foley, a daughter of Martin & Catherine (Cahill) Foley and to them have been born seven children; Sarah (Sister Paulinus), who is in a convent on Staten Island, New York City; Winnie (Sister Saint Charles), who is at home and is engaged in teaching school; Maggie and Mattie (K.C. Gillis); are in a convent at Tignish; Lorretta; Bertha (Sister St. Maura); and Alfred J. are at home. The family are well known throughout this community and are all highly respected, moving in the best social circles and always casting their influence in favor of such movements as promised to benefit the community.
