Few deaths have caused such sincere sorrow as that which occurred in the community of York in the passing of M. Orlo Vesey at the P.E.I. Hospital on Friday, July 11th after a prolonged illness of over three years which she bore with patience and Christian fortitude. She was lovingly cared for by her devoted family during this period and all possible medical aid and care procured for her comfort by her son Arthur, with whom she resided. She will always be missed in the community where she took such a keen interest and active part in all church and community welfare. At an early age she became a member of the York Methodist Church, later the United Church, she was a life member of the Woman's Missionary Society, a valued member of the choir and for a time organist. She organized and was the beloved leader of the Mission Circle, which she always welcomed to her home where she was known as "Aunt Orlo" to all the boys and girls. She loved to entertain young people and they will always remember the good times enjoyed at sing songs and other gatherings and the Christian influence she exercised overall. Born at York 65 years ago, she was the daughter of the late Amos West and Mary Drake and in 1904 was married to Heath E.O. Vesey, who predeceased her 14 years ago. She leaves to mourn one daughter, Mary, Mrs. Harold Metcalfe of Dartmouth, N.S. and one son, Arthur on the homestead. She is also survived by two sisters, one brother and three grandsons. She was laid to rest in York cemetery; a short service in her home was followed by a service in the York United Church by her pastor, Rev. J.A. Nicholson, who frequently visited her during her long illness. Assisting at the funeral service was Rev. F.H. Littlejohns, a former pastor, and Rev. Thos. Wilson of West Covehead. The pallbearers were: Messrs. Ollie Brown, Minto Foster, Frank Vessey, Leigh Vessey, Finlay Drake and Wallace Mallett. The very large number attending the funeral, the beautiful flowers, numerous letters of sympathy all show the love and regard in which the deceased was held.

The community of York was shocked and saddened when it became known on Monday, October 30th, (1933) that Mr. Heath Vesey had passed away unexpectedly. Mr. Vesey had suffered a prolonged illness of 10 years standing, years of intermittent suffering and comparative release and had been shortly before his passing employed about his farm duties. These years of pain of uncertainty, of mingled hope and painful doubt, were passed by him in uncomplaining patience and with cheerful resignation. He was always to be found a cheerful companion to both young and old and will be kindly remembered and sadly missed in both the home and community. Mr. Vesey was a son of the late Thomas Vesey, York, and was 54 years of age. He married Miss Orlo West, daughter of the late Amos West, York. She survives him with a family of two, Mr. Arthur, a well-known music teacher and Miss Mary, both at home. The surviving sisters and brothers are the Misses Julia and Elizabeth, Charlottetown, Hammond and Abner, York, and Dr. Eustace M. Vesey, Panora, Sask. The funeral service was appropriately conducted by the Rev. G.A. Christie, his pastor assisted by the Rev. Mr. Boothroyd, Hunter River, and the Rev. Mr. Wilson, Covehead, and was very largely attended. The musical service led by Mrs. W.J. Mutch, Cherry Valley with Mrs. B.R. Brown, York, organist was exceptionally beautiful. Among the many beautiful floral expressions of sympathy were tributes from the Sabbath School, the congregation and Y.P.S. of York Church. The pallbearers were Messrs. Milton Vesey, and Archie Vesey, York, Ambrose Mellett, Union Road, A.R. Wise and B.R. Holman, Charlottetown, W.H. Drake, Pownal. The interment was in York Cemetery under the direction of N.D. McLean.

The death of George William Drake, aged 80 years, of 412 Third Street, east, occurred at his home on Saturday, December 14. The Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 17, at 2 p.m. from the chapel of the Saskatoon Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. G. S. Packham. Surviving are two sons, Henry of New Westminster, B.C., and Gordon C., Regina, Sask. His wife predeceased him in 1944.

George and Elmira were neighbors so knew each other probably most of their lives. After their marriage in 1888 they lived and farmed on Lot 49, Pownal Bay, P.E.I. for a year or so, then settled on a farm at Mt. Mellick, P.E.I. Lois Chandler, who from the age of 16 helped with baby Harry and Gordon, stayed on as helper for Elmira with the housework and cooking until 1946. Lois died in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1967 at the age of 90. After Gordon was born, Elmira was involved in an elevator accident at the hospital that crashed to the ground and left her a semi-invalid from that time on.
George moved from Mt. Mellick to Strasbourg, Saskatchewan in the spring of 1906 until 1918. Together with son Harry and his wife Margaret, they operated a John Deere implement business. They then moved to Beatty, Saskatchewan where they farmed and then to North Battleford, Saskatchewan where they had another John Deere outlet with George and Harry in business together. Then in 1925 George bought 8 acres just south of Saskatoon and he built a fox ranch. All the buildings were very well built and kept very tidy. He also invented many things he used on the fox ranch that other fox ranchers used. At the age of 76, George sold "the Ranch" to his grandson Willard and retired, moving to a home in Saskatoon. George loved cars and had one of the first with lamps you had to light. The story is told that when he went downtown in the "Buick" he would drive on the streetcar tracks.

A well-known resident of the Shuswap area, Henry (Harry) Milton Drake died on Aug. 10, 1965 in Kamloops, B.C. at the age of 73. Mr. Drake was born at Pownal, P.E.I. on April 17, 1892 and came west in 1906. For many years he operated a store and farmed in the Shuswap area. Surviving him are daughter, Mrs. Irma Neufeld, of Zelandia, Saskatchewan; two sons, Willard of Chase, B.C. and Gordon of Calgary, AB.; also nine grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret on July 04, 1962. Rev. P.A. Galardi conducted the funeral service at Schoenings Funeral Chapel, on Friday Aug 13 at 2 PM. Interment in the family plot, Hillside Cemetery.

Funeral service for Gordon Clarke Drake, 53, of 3029 Kings Road, was held recently at Lakeview United Church, and burial was in Riverside Memorial Park. Mr. Drake had been parts manager for the John Deere Plow Co., Ltd. Born at Charlottetown, P.E.I., he was educated at Strasbourg and Saskatoon. In 1924 he commenced employment with the John Deere firm in Saskatoon, transferring to the Regina office in 1933 as parts manager. An ardent member of the Amateur Radio association, he took an active part in the home defense signal corps during the Second World War. Surviving are his wife, Margaret; a son, Earl, Karachi, Pakistan; a daughter, Mrs. Morley White, 1751 Royal Street; a brother, Harry, Aldergrove, B.C., and three grandchildren.

In 1923 John got his leg caught under the bull wheel of the binder. Marg drove the car to Keddleston, and took her father to Regina by train. It saved his life but the leg could not be saved. John bought land from Nat Gay in Saskatchewan.
JOHN RICHARD DRAKE
The funeral service for the late John Richard Drake took place at the Keddleston United Church Friday afternoon at two o'clock. Mr Gordon Wanless officiated. Pallbearers were George Bradley, C. Bradley, A. Wilke, J. Coles, W. Tindall and B. Foxon. Mr. Drake was born in 1871 at Waterside, near Pownal, Prince Edward Island. In 1898 he married Miss Susannah Jane Drake at Cornwall, P.E.I. The family lived at Waterside until 1911. Early that spring he joined George Drake at Strasbourg, Sask., and in the fall of the same year located on the farm three miles north west of Keddleston, which is still the family home. Beside Mrs. Drake three children survive: Russell and Mary at Keddleston and Mrs. W. Wheatley, Liberty. Mr. George Drake, a brother, lives in Saskatoon. Mr. Drake was a member of the United Church and for some time was superintendent of the Sunday school at Keddleston. He was secretary and member of the local school board for about twenty-five years and served as the secretary for the local telephone company for about the same length of time. He has been in indifferent health for the past three years, although until the past two weeks he was up and about. Another page in the history of Keddleston is written with the passing of a pioneer who made his contribution to its development, to its gradual change from the unsettled prairie into an organized community. The West is not the country for weaklings or those who are afraid of hard work, who lack courage and perseverance. Men who made the West are those who stick to it, through thick and thin, through bad times and good times, through discouragements and droughts.

HEART HARVEST - A very interesting event took place last evening, the 16th inst, at the residence of Mr Enoch Drake, Cornwall, when their only daughter Janie Drake, was united in wedlock to Mr John R Drake of Pownal. The bride was supported by Miss Ella Howard of Cornwall, and Mr Wm Lane was best man for the groom. The bride was dressed in white Swiss muslin and looked beautiful. The ceremony was performed by Rev Mr Dawson, of Cornwall, assisted by Rev. W. J. Howard, of Pownal. The immediate relatives of the contracting parties were present, forming a numerous and happy party. After supper Dr Taylor of Charlottetown, proposed the health of the bride and groom with which he coupled the name of Rev G F Dawson who responded. The evening was enlivened with music, singing and games and a crowd of the Cornwall youths added to the interest by a rousing chivaree which, however, was conducted in a very orderly and respectable manner. Margaret Lillian Wheatley was born in Waterside, PEl in 1908 to John and Susannah Drake. She came to Keddleston with her parents as a young girl and finished her high school and normal school training in Regina going on to teach in various schools including Penzance and Liberty. She met her husband Bill of Liberty and were married in 1931. They continued to live and farm in the district all their lives. Margaret was active in the UCW ladies organization, she enjoyed travelling and her garden. Predeceased by her husband Bill in 1986; parents John and Susannah Drake; brother Russell and sister Mary Drake. She is survived by a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. Fotheringham -McDougall Funeral Service of Watrous and Nokomis were in charge of arrangements.
