First Generation

1. William COMPTON, son of William Henry COMPTON and Sarah SWEET, was born about 1771 in Compton Creek, Monmouth Co., NJ, died about 1867 in Belle River, Queens, P.E.I., and was buried in Brooklyn Cemetery, P.E.I..

General Notes: WILLIAM - THE FIRST TO P.E.I.

The 6th generation of Compton's to America and the 1st generation to live on P.E.I.

William was born at Compton Creek, New Jersey in 1771, and moved with his family to Parrtown, New Brunswick in 1783. He belonged to the Saint John Militia. Following service in the war of 1812 he was granted a tract of wilderness land lying

to the westward of Quaco (now Saint Martins), New Brunswick, in 1815. He was a shipbuilder specializing in the making of vessel's bilge pumps, taff-rail posts and lignum vitae sheaves and blocks.

William married Mary Vaughan who was born on the 26th of February 1784 at Chester, Nova Scotia. She was the daughter of Daniel Vaughan and Lydia Harrington, Loyalists from Scituate, Rhode Island, who went to Chester, Nova Scotia and later to

Saint Martins, New Brunswick.

Legend has it that William and Mary lived in different parts of Nova Scotia, before settling at Belle Creek, Prince Edward Island around 1840. They had a family of twelve children. Mary died on March 16, 1866 and was the first person to be

buried in Brooklyn Cemetery, which is located on the farm that belonged to her son Joseph Benjamin, her husband William died the following year.

At Brooklyn, Lot 61, on the 24th at the residence of his son, Mr. Joseph Compton, Mr. William Compton, in the 90th year of his age. Deceased was a native of New Jersey, U.S.

General Notes: Henry was born at Quaco, New Brunswick in 1803. He married Rebecca Ann Hume and they had four sons and seven daughters. Henry and Rebecca moved to Belle Creek, Prince Edward Island around 1845, where Henry worked as a joiner. After Rebecca's

death c. 1850, Henry returned to Brunswick where he married a widow, Matilda Ann Fowler. Henry and Matilda moved back to Belle Creek c. 1854 and they had one son and four daughters. Henry died at Belle Creek just before the birth of his

youngest daughter in April, 1863. He was sixty years old.

6. John E. COMPTON was born on 6 Apr 1812 in Quaco, St. Martin's, Saint John, N.B., died on 7 Aug 1901 in Belle River, Queens, P.E.I., and was buried in Belle River Cemetary, Queens, P.E.I..

General Notes: Catherine and Pheebe never married.

Rev. Donald MacDonald was a Church of Scotland Minister who became something of a legend in his own time. During his forty year career he became a familiar sight in many communities across the Island.

He emigrated to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia from Perthshire, Scotland in 1824, at the age of forty-two. Two years later he came to Prince Edward Island, returning on occasion to Cape Breton for short periods of time. It was there that William

and Mary Compton and their family of twelve children heard his teachings and became followers of him, commonly called "MacDonaldites".

John Compton, son of William and Mary followed Rev. MacDonald to PEI as a young man, and settled at Belle River.

Rev. MacDonald carefully organized his followers into congregations and then hand-picked a number of Elders who could provide leadership during periods of his absence.

John Compton was appointed a ministering Elder for the congregations at Belle River, Brooklyn and Bangor on July 13, 1879 successor to his brother-in-law the late George Bears, to continue the teachings of the Rev. Donald MacDonald who died

Feb. 21, 1867.

John Compton's eldest daughter, Lydia, a follower of Rev. MacDonald who heard him preach many times, penned these lines after his death as a part of her tribute to his memory.

Still, me thinks I hear him speaking

In that thrilling earnest tone

In the warm and glowing accents

While he spoke of going home

While his bosom glowed with rapture

And his heart with love o'erflowed

Bidding all to seek those blessings

Which a saviour's love bestowed.

OBITUARY

CARTNEY W COMPTON LONG TELEPHONE CO LINE FOREMAN DIES

Cartney Wm. Compton, 72, of 17 Ashland st, retired Telephone Co outside line forman and a former member of Malden Aerie of Eagles' and Melrose lodge of Odd Fellows, passed away last evening at 9:45 at a Melrose nursing home. He had been in

failing health for some time. A resident of this city for the past 40 years, he was born In Milltown, Prince Edward Island, son of the late Wm and

Mary (Martin) Compton. He was employed by the local office of the Telephone Company for 28 years prior to his retirement in 1930.

Surviving are his wife, Ms Mary (Dryden) Compton: a daughter, Mrs Harriet S Tubman of Hull; two brothers, James E Compton of Cambridge and Peter D Compton of Roxbury; and a sister, Mrs. Margaret Fulmer of Montreal.

Funeral services will be held at two Thursday afternoon, at the Margeson funeral home with Rev. Bruce Stewart of Cambridge officiating. Burial will be at Forest Dale cemetery.

(Compton) Grant, daughter of Donald Compton and Elizabeth nee (Bears) of Belle River were united in marriage at Gerogetown, PEI. The happy couple have been well known and highly respected residents of the Island ever since. Mr. Grant's

ancestors originally of Scotland came to the Island from Guysboro, N.S. upwards of a century ago. While those of Mrs. Grant's, the Compton's were United Empire Loyalist's, the original domicile of the connections being Lancastershire, England.

PRIVATE HENRY BRIAN COMPTON

Six years ago, in 1910, Henry went out west and at the outbreak of the warjoined the 6th brigade of the 28th North West Battalion. He had spent ten months in the trenches when he was wounded the 8th day of June, 1916. His sister Emma who went

west at the same time as he did is now visiting friends on the Island.

The Distinguished Conduct Medal has been awarded to the following men of this division: To No. 73741 Pte. H.B. Compton, 28th Battalion for Distinguished Conduct on Oct. 8th, after being dug out of the debris caused by a mine exploded by the

Germans, he immediately volunteered to go forward with a party of Bombers and assisted in bombing the enemy out of the crater. He also assisted under heavy artillary and machine gun fire in digging out four other men buried by the explosion,

and saving their lives. He is reported as having shown great gallantry throughout. The Major General commanding has much pleasure in conveying the congratulations of the Army and Corps Commanders to Private Compton.

OBITUARY - House speaker Dan Compton dies Wednesday

Members of the P.E.I. Legislature have extended sympathy to the family of Dan Compton, a former speaker of the legislature who died Wednesday morning. He was 75.

Mr. Compton served as a Progressive Conservative MLA for Queens 4th. He was legislature speaker from 1979 to 1983.

Opposition Leader Leone Bagnall moved the motion of sympathy, praising the late Mr. Compton for his work and extending sympathy to his family.

Premier Joe Ghiz also expressed sympathy for Mr. Compton's family. He said the former speaker served as a respected member of the legislature and proved himself to be a gentle, caring and compassionate individual.

Lynwood MacPherson (L-Queens 4th) said Mr. Compton made an invaluable contribution to his community, both through many personal contributions and through his involvement with the Alcxoholics Anonymous Program.

House Speaker Eddie Clark also expressed his sorrow at the death of Mr. Compton.

COMPTON - The funeral service for Daniel James Compton was held on April 21, 1990 at the Ferguson-Hamilton Funeral Home, Montague where the service was conducted by Rev. Ted MacDougall. Organist was Irene Fraser. During the service Donna

Inman, Gail MacPherson, Debbie MacKenzie and Carol Johnston sang Lamb of God, accompanied by Bill MacPherson on guitar. Congregational hymns were The Lords My Shephard and Amazing Grace. In attendance were: the Speaker of the P.E.I.

Legislature, members of the P.E.I. Legislature, the leader of the Opposition, members and former members of the PC party, members of Fourth Queens PC Women. Pallbearers were: James Madsen, Russell Compton, Simon Compton, Bill Maes, George

Compton and Clifford MacLeod. Flowerbearers were: Fraser Inman, Scott MacKenzie, Wendall MacKenzie, Jerry Johnston, William MacPherson and Scott Millar. Internment took place in Belle River Cemetery. Royal Canadian Legion Branch #7, Eldon

Mulgrave, Nova Scotia. (CP) Reloacted undamaged from a sandbar off Auld's Cove, five miles from here, The Prince Edward Island schooner "Hathaven" was bound for her home port tonight, but the body of her Captain was consigned to the sea.

Laden with coal the 40 ton schooner rammed the sandbar early Saturday morning and when two members of her crew came up from below after the shock, Captain Oliver Compton, 35 year old Belle Rivwer, P.E.I. seaman had disapppeared. The

"Hathaven" was freed from the bar at high tide early this morning by the powerful auxilliary schooner "Seldom". In less than 24 hours after she grounded in the calm weather on Saturday.

A swift current was believed to have swept the body of Captain Compton out to sea or across the strait of Canso to the Cape Breton coast. Efforts to recover his body on Saturday were fruitless.

Besides the Captain, James Compton, his brother and Wallace Jardine both of Belle River were the only members of the crew. The vessel was in Compton's charge when it left here today for Belle River. The two member crew were sleeping below

when the "Hathaven" rammed the sandbar at one o'clock Saturday morning, only 200 feet from the spot where the oil tanker "Trontolite" went ashore 3 years ago. Aroused by the shock of the vessel hitting the bar, they ran up on deck, but were

unable to find their Captain. It is believed here that Captain Captain lost his balance when the vessel struck and fell overboard into the current swirling past the "Hathaven". He had been at sea for 20 of his 35 years. The current was

blamed also by Mulgrave seamen for drawing the "Hathaven" into the bank. The weather was calm when she struck and there was not enough wind to drive her ashore.

OBITUARY THE LATE CAPT. WELLINGTON HUME

The Funeral of the late Capt. Wellington Hume was held from his late residence , at Iris, on Wednesday, Feb. 24th, and not withstanding the roads, was well attended.

In accordance with his last wishes, internment was at Brooklyn. This necessitated the traversing for a distance of an unfrequented road which was utterly impassable for horses which had to be abandoned when this was reached, and it was a

touching site to see the body being born along by the hands of faithful friends across the intervening space to where they were met with horses from Brooklyn and the journey by taem resumed. Thus was laid to rest one who was widely known and

highly respected.

Wellington married Elizabeth BAIN. Elizabeth was born about 1843, died on 29 Mar 1904, and was buried in Caledonia Cemetery, PEI.
