Contents of the P.E.I. 1881, 1891, 1901, Censuses and the PEIGS Census Indexes

The PEIGS have computerized indexes available for the 1891 and for the 1901 censuses. These indices can save one the possibility of ordering census records not applicable to your family. Find your family in the census index, then order the applicable census book or diskette. These are a wonderful finding aid - virtually indispensible to one doing much research on P.E.I. families! These indexes are available on disk in DBase III format which may be imported into most database programs, and as printed lists customized by surname and census year. See the PEIGS page for more details. The indexes may be ordered by census year and include the following information:
Lot and section number in which the individual is found plus:
- Column 1: the surname of the individual
- Column 2: the given name(s) of the individual
- Column 3: the age of the individual
- Column 4: the individual's religion
- Column 5: the individual's occupation
Lot and section number plus:
- Column 1: the line number on the enumerator's transcript
- Column 2: the number of vessels owned by the household
- Column 3: the number of fishing shanties owned by the household
- Column 4: the number of houses under construction
- Column 5: the number of houses uninhabited
- Column 6: the house number (inhabited)
- Column 7: the family number
- Column 8: the surname of the individual
- Column 9: the given name(s) of the individual
- Column 10: the sex of the individual
- Column 11: the age of the individual
- Column 12: the month if a child was born in the last twelve months
- Column 13: the birthplace of the individual
- Column 14: the individual's religion
- Column 15: the ethnic origin of the individual
- Column 16: the individual's occupation
- Column 17: marital status
- Column 18: individual going to school
- Column 19: individual was deaf or dumb
- Column 20: individual was blind
- Column 21: individual was of unsound mind
- Column 22: any remarks written by the census taker
Note: Lots 21 and 22 are not extant for the 1891 census. Lot number and section plus:
- Column 1: the line number on the enumerator's transcript
- Column 2: the house number (inhabited) W- wood, B- brick, S- stone, type of house (i.e. 1.5/5 - one and half stories with 5 rooms)
- Column 3: the family number
- Column 4: the surname of the individual
- Column 5: the given name(s) of the individual
- Column 6: the sex of the individual
- Column 7: the age of the individual
- Column 8: marital status
- Column 9: relationship to the head of the household
- Column 10: the birthplace of the individual
- Column 11: French yes or no
- Column 12: birth place of the individual's father
- Column 13: birth place of the individual's mother
- Column 14: the individual's religion
- Column 15: the individual's occupation
- Column 16: individual was an employer
- Column 17: individual was a wage earner
- Column 18: unemployed during the week prior to the census
- Column 19: average number of employees during the past year
- Column 20: individual can read
- Column 21: individual can write
- Column 22: individual was deaf or dumb
- Column 23: individual was blind
- Column 24: individual was of unsound mind
Lot number and section plus:
- Column 1: the dwelling house number
- Column 2: the family number
- Column 3: the surname of the individual
- Column 4: the given name(s) of the individual
- Column 5: the sex of the individual
- Column 6: the colour of the individual's skin
- Column 7: relationship of the individual to the head of the household
- Column 8: marital status, M-married, S-single, W-widowed
- Column 9: birth day
- Column 10: birth month
- Column 11: birth year
- Column 12: the age of the individual (note the age of the children under 1 year of age was recorded as a decimal)
- Column 13: the birthplace of the individual
- Column 14: year of immigration to Canada
- Column 15: year of naturalization
- Column 16: the ethnic origin of the individual
- Column 17: nationality
- Column 18: the individual's religion
- Column 19: the individual's occupation
- Column 20: financially supported by the individual's own means
- Column 21: individual is an employer
- Column 22: individual is an employee
- Column 23: individual works on his/her own account
- Column 24: individual is working at a trade in a factory or at home
- Column 25: months working in a factory during the past year
- Column 26: months working at home during the past year
- Column 27: months working elsewhere
- Column 28: earnings from occupation or trade in the past year
- Column 29: extra earnings in the past year
- Column 30: months the individual attended school in the past year
- Column 31: individual can read
- Column 32: individual can write
- Column 33: individual can speak English
- Column 34: individual can speak French
- Column 35: individual's mother tongue
- Column 36: any infirmities the individual has
All of the 1891 and 1901 censuses are available from the PEIGS. Many lots of the 1881 census are transcribed and available (with more being added each month), as are indices to the 1891 and 1901 census.
