The Boswalls of Kirkcaldy were descendants of the Boswell Lairds of Auchinleck, Ayrshire. They were also descended from the royal Stewarts through an illegitimate daughter of James Hamilton, Earl of Arran. Robert Boswall�s mother was Agnes Oliphant of the prominent Kirkcaldy merchantman family, and his father was in the same business; many of his ancestors� occupations are described in documents as "skipper burgess of Kirkcaldy."

Robert Boswall was chosen by a childless relative, Dr. Alexander Boswall, to be heir to his purchased estate of Blackadder in Berwickshire, Scotland. To prepare him for this responsibility, Robert was placed in the Royal Navy and a fiance, Lady Lucy Ann Preston of Lincolnshire, was chosen for him. Robert did well at sea as Master�s Mate aboard the HMS Queen Charlotte and when his captain died at sea he was bidden to take care of the widow and her daughter. [The HMS Queen Charlotte did burn at sea off the island of Cabrera in March 1800, and although the record does not show the captain�s name as Connell, he may have been one of the officers, and the date is consistent with this account.]
Boswall was made Lieutenant-Commander in October 1800, in command of the British Gunship Cacafogo, during English hostilities with Spain and France. While moored at the Royal Navy Garrison in Gibraltar, he married his former Captain's [?] daughter. Dr Boswall disinherited him for disobeying his wishes and Lady Lucy Ann Preston was given to another cousin, Thomas Boswall, who did inherit both the Blackadder estate, and the family�s Kirkcaldy shipyard. The Blackadder estate was sold off in 1924 by Thomas� descendants, the Baronets Houston-Boswall, although when his daughter Euphemia inherited it in 1830 she was considered to be one of the richest heiresses in Britain.
This was not the only consequence of Robert�s actions. When he eventually sailed into Portsmouth Harbour with a wife and child in tow, he was immediately turfed from regular service and put on half-pay for his folly, after which he moved to Leven, Fifeshire. No doubt he was bitter at missing the Napoleonic Wars! However he was humiliated once again- when the War of 1812 began and he was called back to Portsmouth to take command of a warship, he was illegally off on a trip to India sailing a Kircaldy merchantman for his luckier cousin, the heir Thomas Boswall. His chance to salvage his naval career had been lost, and he was once again denied the chance to be a player in the great events of England�s history, as he had been at the turn of the century.

In 1835 these siblings sold their property in Leven and moved to England near their eldest brother, who had married in Somerset. They were assisted in this move by the Blackadder Boswalls with whom they remained close.

Notes for DR ALEXANDER HENRY BOSWALL:
Briefly considered for inheriting the estate of Blackadder should the poor health of the heiress Euphemia Boswall prove fatal, but a cousin, John Donaldson Boswall, was proven to be a closer relation to the original owner, the first Dr. Alexander Boswall. So he and his siblings were instead granted an allowance from the estate, with the stipulation that his sisters behave themselves. His father (the original choice, Robert Boswall) and brothers fought to have him named heir, as he was serving in India at the time of the crisis and could not be present to speak for himself.
Having been born aboard ship, he seemed to have been a wanderer; he left Scotland for his wife�s home in England, then India, then Prince Edward Island, and briefly to New Zealand.
Once in PEI he bought property in Dunstaffnage and built "Somerset Cottage" on St Peter's Road. In later life he moved in with his son Albert on "Pleasant Hill", the farm in Mount Mellick next to Albert's father-in-law, Samuel Lane. His trip to New Zealand aboard the Prince Edward as ship�s doctor in 1859 was short-lived as he did not like the country and returned to the Island, although he did have a first cousin there, the son of his sister Lucy.
