We tried hard to be as accurate as possible as we researched libraries in Prince Edward Island, Scotland, British Columbia and New Brunswick. In many cases dates and names are shown differently for the same person. We had to accept information submitted in good faith if we did not have the personal knowledge or time to check it out. Please feel free to communicate errors or omissions to us for correcting.
I N T R O D U C T I O N
My name is Eardley Beaton. I was born at Bonshaw, Prince Edward Island on April 24, 1939. I had a very happy childhood with my loving parents, Jimmie and Linda Beaton. I remember my uncles, aunts, grandparents and some cousins on visits to their homes or at the occasional picnic by the sea. I regret that we didn't get to know more of the Beatons on the Island, but like everyone else, we were trying to scratch out a living and deal with concerns of World War II etc.
When I moved to Western Canada in 1961, it was my good fortune to meet many of Malcolm Beaton's family, who either came west around 1910, or were born later in the Piapot and Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan areas. We have since enjoyed many fiddle tunes and family gatherings in Calgary, Kimberley and Vancouver.
Many thanks must go to all those who have cooperated by supplying, in many cases, completed Family Record Sheets together with newspaper clippings, pictures and personal memories. Others have done their best by adding small bits of information, all of which helps complete the puzzle. I want to especially acknowledge the work done by the late Gordon Glaholt. He produced a Beaton story in 1978 that featured Malcolm Beaton's family and their early days at Piapot, Saskatchewan. Gordon, skillfully, researched early Highland history and he created a scenario that could have had Farquhar being born in Western Canada to a Hudson's Bay fur trader of Scottish origin and a native Indian maiden. This, he suggested, might have meant young Farquhar was taken back to Scotland for rearing by relatives and when he grew up he married and returned to Canada. It seems pretty far-fetched, but since we can't prove him wrong, it was very creative and Gordon must be smiling up there as I recall the story.
YOU CAN REALLY HELP BY:
1.Remove the "Family Record" sheet which should be the next page, and photocopy as many sheets as you need for all of your family members.
2.Complete as accurately as possible. Everyone appreciates having their names spelled correctly. Get all names - they make it more fun. Let's get family highlights, type of work, major achievements, community service, leadership roles, hobbies, sports and current addresses. Include what you wish - leave out if you must!
3.Send completed forms to:

We have no definite research to confirm the birthplace or birth dates of our ancestors, Farquhar Beaton and Flora Nicholson. We have, however, lots of information to lead us to believe that they existed, such as:
1. Land Lease dated January 14, 1845 given to Farquhar Beaton for 100 acres on the Old Princetown Road (Hazel Grove/Hunter River, P.E.I.).
2. Church records describing births of their children.
3. P.E.I. Census Records dated 1861, 1881, 1891 and 1901 indicating parents born in Scotland and children all born on P.E.I.
4. Atlas of P.E.I. showing Farquhar as a land owner.
5. Farquhar's Last Will and Testament dated February 18, 1887.
6. Flora's obituary indicates they both came from Scotland approximately 1839.
7. Family "legends" passed down indicate:
- Nicholson's were wealthy residents of Scorrybreac, Portree, Isle of Skye, Scotland;
- Queen Victoria once visited Katy McClure (Flora's mother);
- Flora was a Duchess;
- Flora was given a big wedding by her mother on the Isle of Skye and they left for Canada the next day; or
- Flora was banished from the family for going with Farquhar and they had to be married over an anvil in a blacksmith shop;
- The Beatons were from Penyghael, Isle of Mull, Scotland;
- Farquhar was a coachman for the Duke of Argyle;
- Flora "ate a quilt" worrying the first year she lived on P.E.I. She was scared of all the trees, Indian attacks, etc.
- "There is a fortune in gold in a ship that sunk off the Coast of Scotland... and you may get some".
- Flora had one brother and several sisters in the Hunter River area, and one or more sisters married MacDonalds at Iona, P.E.I.
- Flora used to smoke a corncob pipe, also she was very religious and a very hard worker that was known to pack a load of sticks on her back and walk the 9 miles to the market in Charlottetown, P.E.I.
F O R M A T
This genealogical story (or Family Tree) covers five generations with Farquhar Beaton being the First Generation. The Second Generation sets out the family of our eight ancestors, all of which were born on Prince Edward Island. The order is oldest to youngest. This is very important. For example, since Mary was the eldest, her descendants will always come first in all generations, i.e. Third, Fourth and Fifth. Then, in order will be descendants of Margaret, Malcolm, Christina, Jessie, Catherine, John and Samuel. Therefore, in order to find if you have an entry, you must know your ancestors.
Cousins are determined from the different branches such as:
First Generation - Parents
Second Generation - Brothers & Sisters
Third Generation - 1st Cousins
Fourth Generation - 2nd Cousins
Fifth Generation - 3rd CousinsAbbreviations:

History:
Farquhar and Flora were parents of eight children at least, and we have census and other records to support this. Many mysteries remain about their exact birth places and dates (Flora and Farquhar). Farquhar was also referred to as "Frederick" in later life? Was he a coachman or a farmer? Census records and church records give confirmation of approximate ages and other details. He signed his name with an "x" indicating he could not write and mostly spoke the Gaelic language. His Last Will and Testament was dated Feb. 18, 1887 and probated Oct. 12, 1890. As was a custom of the times, he gave everything to his wife and the son who agreed to stay and farm - this was John, who never left the Hunter River area. 1901 Census show Flora as a widow living with son John. Birthdate Aug? 1819 - born Scotland - Presbyterian - came to Canada 1839. A Farquhar Beaton was born on Isle of Tiree in 1818? Flora was a very refined and intelligent lady who was a daughter of Isle of Skye parents of some substance. Her father was Sir Sam Nicholson and her mother was Katie MacLure. They (Farquhar and Flora) took 3 weeks on their honeymoon trip by boat from Scotland.

History:
Census and marriage records confirm Mary was the oldest of the Beaton family born in the Hunter River area. She was born in 1842 or 1843. Bill Goss of Los Angeles, California, recently advised he is a grandson of Mary and Richard Goss. Bill was born at Monson, Mass. His father was David Goss and his mother was Elisabeth McAuliffe. Mary operated a boarding house in Quincy, Mass. in 1896. She resided at Mt. Vernon, N.Y. in 1933. Presumably, her children moved to the States with her. All three husbands were farmers as listed by census records. Besides Bill Goss, we have spoken with Hugh Goss, Calgary, and Molly Drake, Vernon Bridge, P.E.I. Mary was an ambitious and determined woman. Her first husband, Richard Goss, reportedly died of a ruptured appendix and second husband, Nicholas Wickham, died in a mining accident in Colorado.

History:
Prolific father and champion fiddler (we wonder if there is a connection, ha ha). Mac fathered 22 children in two marriages. Malcolm lived in Hunter River for some 62 years before heading West to Piapot and eventually Moose Jaw, Sask. He was musical and became a champion old-time fiddler. His early life saw him have three different properties on the Island. He operated a meat market, drove a rural mail route and probably did a little farming and "dealing" to make a buck to help raise two families. He has left many treasured memories with his family, not the least of which is the most musical branch of the clan.

She was a very religious woman and she seemed to kneel for hours saying her prayers. The 1901 census shows the family farming at Lot 33, (Brackley Point).

History:
Johnny Beaton was a mail driver and farmer at Hunter River. The writer personally met Annie, James Henry, (everyone on P.E.I. knew him), John Elias, Sarah Maye, Martha Lilla, and Dinah Mildred. We understand John and family to be quite religious. Sarah Jane MacInnis was a daughter of Hugh MacInnis and Katy MacMillan of Rennie's Road. Johnny Beaton lived at Rennie's Road, just out of Hunter River, on the farm he inherited from Farquhar. This property which was known as the "top of the hill farm" has been renovated several times and part of the land has been sold off.

In politics, he was a Conservative, but generous to other views. This tall distinguished businessman was known as "Pop" by his family. As the writer's grandfather, he is remembered wearing a 3 piece suit, watch fob and spats over his shoes. We understand when Jane Hooper became a widow, she married Fred Beaton in Piapot. Fred Ellis, Burnaby, B.C. is a son of Beatrice Bertram. We require Family Record Sheets so that we may get all the details.

History:
Jack was the third son of Malcolm Beaton - born at Hunter River, P.E.I. As it was common for Islanders to go to the Boston area for work, he and his first wife may have been married there. After divorcing in 1917, Jack remarried and started his second family in Vermont. Jack was a stone cutter employed at C.L. O'Clair Granite Works, Barre, Vermont. His second wife was a nurse and she was an avid fisherman and hiker. We are delighted to have "recently discovered" all our many cousins in Vermont - thanks to Nancy (Dow) Fletcher, we have lots of details. Also, thanks to Mary Isabelle Ward for information on the first family.

Pearl helped raise the brothers and sisters in her new family at Piapot, Sask. before moving on to the Moose Jaw area. Her first marriage was troublesome and then she moved to Vancouver, B.C. and with her second husband, Robert Hunter, they operated pool halls and boarding houses from the 1940's onward. Pearl had many stories to tell about her life and in fact she wrote that story before her death. Pearl was known and loved by the Beatons from Moose Jaw to Vancouver.

Early memories had him playing with many friends, including the nearby native Indians. He has lived in Moose Jaw, Sask. and worked in the many ranches and farms on the prairies - then on to the Okanagan Valley for a number of years. He worked as a teamster on ranches and carpentry jobs. He loved his family and friends and his music. He was one of the last "old-time fiddlers". Rural outdoors and his animals gave him great pleasure in the wide open Western plains. Dan and Annie spent the last 20 years in the Calgary, Alta. area.

James Henry was well known around Hunter River and Charlottetown where he could be seen "preaching" on the streets. I remember talking to a couple of oldtimers in Hartsville who told me about one hot day in Hunter River when they spotted Jim wearing a heavy winter coat. They said, "it's a warm day Mr. Beaton", he looked at them under his bushy eyebrows and replied "not as hot as it will be in hell if you don't mend your ways". He died at Beach Grove Extended Care Facility in 1983 - he was either 96 or 98 depending on which birthdates you use. "Jim" loved children and was always arranging games for kids. His marriage didn't last long. His only son, John, is a first mate on the P.E.I. ferries.

History:
Mildred and Claude were involved in operating the Morell Hotel in Charlottetown, P.E.I. in the 40's. We need more details on dates of family members to put their stories together. We certainly have talked with Claudette in her busy nursing home as well as Maynard during our Island visits. The writer enjoys talks with "Johnny Mac" on the West Coast. Hopefully, we will have more details in the next edition.

B: Sept. 17, 1885 - Bonshaw, P.E.I.
D: Sept. 27, 1916 - Killed in Action, W.W.IHistory:
The oldest son of Sam and Catherine Margaret Beaton (and the writer's namesake) was never married. Heath never made it back to his beloved Canada. He was killed at the 2nd battle of the Somme in France. We take pride in having his handwritten letter to his sister Blanche, which was written in 1915 in Belgium. He wished to be remembered to all the family and friends at Bonshaw and he was looking forward to getting home to his dear Canada. Your supreme sacrifice meant I have not had to serve - Thank you.
"430076 Private Heath Eardley Beaton of the 31st Battalion (Alberta Regiment) died on 27 September 1916 at age 31. Having no known grave, he is commemorated by name on the Vimy Memorial, France."

History:
I visited Uncle Harry (writer's uncle) in Toronto in the late 50's and early 60's as he and his wife Agnes lived in an apartment at 250 Davenport Road where Agnes still resides. We even visited daughter, Pat, in their brick bungalow in the Leaside district. Pat has two daughters. Harry was a dapper dresser as he was a commercial traveller in the clothing industry and an honourary member of the Canadian Travellers Association. Wife Agnes enjoyed attending horse races. I believe she was a nurse.

After her husband's death, Annie operated a boarding house for many years thus showing the strong will of survivorship that is so evident throughout the Beaton Clan. Annie loved to write and she always had a nice verse or two to read. She was a devoted L.O.B.A. Member (Lodge) and active in church and community endeavours.

History:
Jimmie loved P.E.I. and its people. He had spent some time working off Island in Montreal, Toronto, and Prince George, but most of his life was spent in Bonshaw. Later life was enjoyed in the Cornwall area with a neat property at Meadow Bank where he even raised foxes. He was a "frustrated" farmer as he preferred dealing with people, selling everything from fish to radios, shoes, poultry, etc. He enjoyed driving horses in the earlier years. He loved seeing all his many friends around Charlottetown. His dear wife, Melinda, predeceased him after 60 years of marriage.
