The Descendants of John of Yealmton Axworthy
I have some updates on the Axworthy family tree. I have received some very good information from England recently.
George Ley Axworthy was bapt, on March 20th 1868 in St. Augustine, R.C.Church, Rustico at age 75 years, leaving the Church of England and becoming a Catholic. He did this just before his death.
I've discovered that George Ley married his first cousin. His wife Honor Axworthy, was the daughter of George Axworthy and Honor Dustin (married 14 Aug 1795 in England). The children of George Axworthy and Honor Dustin were: Honor Axworthy b.1795, d. July 30 1879, buried in Rustico, PEI; George Felix Axworthy, b.17 Dec 1805; Leadora Axworthy, b.17 nov 1808; and
Christopher Dustin Axworthy, b.1813, d.1813, 6 mos old.
William Axworthy, the brother of the older George above, married Jenny Ley. They had a son George Ley Axworthy. George Ley married on 17 Feb 1816, his first cousin, Honor Axworthy. This is the George (Ley) Axworthy whose will I have. George Ley's and Honor's children were: Lavenia Cecillia Axworthy, b.17 Nov 1818; William Stephens Axworthy, and Ann Amelia Axworthy. These three were all baptized 3 Jan 1820 in England. They also had another son
George Axworthy, b. ca.1821. The only children mentioned in the will were George and Lavenia. The other two either died young, or stayed behind in England.
It is now obvious that it was George, son of George Ley, that married Elizabeth Bolt, and not George Felix, son of George and Honor Dustin. It's finally starting to clear dispite the number of Georges and Honors in these two brothers' families.
I have been picking at this for so long it was driving me crazy. I knew there was something that I was missing. All along it just didn't make sense that George Felix, b. 1805 could be the George, son of George, named in the will that I have. He's too old to be the son of George and Honor...they'd each be far too young to be his parents, and he was born nine years before
they were married. So it just didn't make any sense. George Felix is the brother to Honor Axworthy. George Felix is not her son George, the one who married Elizabeth Bolt.
The name George "Ley", comes from the fact that his mother Jennie's maiden name, was Ley.
I was corresponding with a descendant of the old George's brother (Thomas), and she sent me information from parish/county records of baptisms, marriages etc., for the Axworthys. That is how I first learned of the marriage of first cousins George and Honor. Then, I was in Rustico this
summer going though the church records and found the Abjunation and Baptism for George in 1868 aged 75. They read:
"On the 20th March 1868, I the undersigned, authorized and have received the abjunation of George Exworthy(sic)aged seventy five years, son of _________________, and have absolved him of the heresy of the Church of England in the presence of Pierre Gallant and____________. Witnesses. George A. Belcourt" and,"On the 20th March 1868, I have baptized George Exworthy(sic) aged 75 years, son of _____________.Sponsors Pierre Gallant and ____________. Geo. A. Belcourt" Ref. Accesion No. 3271, Item No. 15-17, St. Augustine R.C. Church, Rustico.
This also helped clue me in that this was the George Axworthy that married his first cousin Honor Axworthy in 1816.
Strangely enough, the index card files at the archives are wrong. They list him as aged 25.
I am guessing that he was quite sick and decided to convert to Catholic Church. I now know that he died sometime between March 20,1868 and May 15, 1869, the date the will was proved. But I haven't found the exact date of his death yet...still looking for it.

Near the end of the 16th century, about 1575, a man was born who was named John of Yealmpton after the village, near Plymouth, that he was born in. General Notes:The last reference that I can find for George Felix and his wife Flora is the birth of their son, Samuel in 1836. Searching the census documents since then have so far shown no evidence of any of these individuals still living on PEI, suggesting that they left the Island sometime between Samuel's birth in 1836 and the 1881 census. The 1881 census leads me to believe that this family moved away from PEI. No reference has been found in the 1861 census, but more research needs to be done on this and the other census documents to try to narrow the family's departure from PEI. It is also plausible that some record of this family may be found in censuses from other provinces in Canada between 1836 and 1881.

General Notes:Ex-City Treasurer Axworthy Dead, 7 Dec 1893, New York Times. HAMILTON, Ontario, Dec. 6. 1893 Thomas Axworthy, ex-City Treasurer of Cleveland, Ohio, died here this afternoon. Axworthy left Cleveland a defaulter to the extent of over half a million dollars in October, 1889. He went to London, England, where he was overtaken by detectives, and about $200,000 of the city's funds recovered. He returned to America, and had been in the real estate business in Hamilton since that time. When Axworthy fled he left property on which his bondsman realized almost all of their losses Speculation was the cause of his downfall.

General Notes:An 1871 Document, which appears to be a kind of local census of the parish of Wembury, near Plymouth, shows as living in Hollacombe Lodge John and Eliza Axworthy, and their five children. Charles, then aged 16 was seving in the Royal Navy, Mary Jane and Emma were described as 'receiving schooling at home and Frederick is just one year old.
On the 11th July 1874, when John's wife Eliza died then aged 45 years, at Staddon Heights, Plymstock, near Plymouth. on her death certificate the occupation of John is given as 'Farm labourer' so he had given up the life of a sailor. He was left to care for Mary Jane, aged 12, Emma aged 7, Frederick, aged 4, and William Robert, aged 27 months.

The following is an extract from a book owned by Donald Nantes, Corry PA, about the history of Corry. (transcribed by Kathleen Nantes on 30 August,1975.)
------W.G. Nantes, member of the firm Nantes & Son, dealers in groceries and produce - Corry, was born in Prince Edward Island, where he was educated in select schools and clercked (sic.) for five years. He spent two years in reading law and writing. He commenced mercantile business in Harbor Creek, Penn., seven miles from Erie City, Erie Co. Penn., where he remained until 1862. He then came to Corry where he carried a general stock for seven years and ran the first store in the city.
Mr. Nantes spent eleven years in the south, Garrisonville, Va. (1870) where he kept a general store and was postmaster. He returned to Corry in 1881, since which time he has been in present business. The subject of this sketch was united in marriage in 1859 in London Ont. Canada to Susanna Kendall, also a native of P.E. Island. They have been the parents of four children, vis., John O.H. a partner in the above business; William Henry, who is also interested in same; George Axe., a graduate of Corry High School, now reading law with Bole, reporter for the Herald; and Charles Frederick.
