The following is an interesting document passed down through my family. It is a turn of the century booklet listing the shareholders of the Merchant's Bank, Charlottetown. Documents such as this can provide wonderful little bits of background information about our ancestors, and clues to their whereabouts at the time of the document's publication.
This printed list is undated, so it is somewhat difficult to establish an exact publication date, but it can be approximated. Samuel Hyde died December 06 1897, and Jane (Mutch) Hyde, his wife, was executrix of his estate (see Will and Administration of Samuel Hyde), and she is listed here as such. Also, the Hon. Donald Farquharson is listed here with his 2nd wife Sarah (Moore) Farquharson. Donald was Premier of P.E.I. from 1898-1901, then federal M.P. till his death in Ottawa on 26 June 1903. Lemuel Hyde, also listed, died 18 April 1902. So, this narrows down the date of this document to the period between Dec. 1897 and April 1902. Perhaps a more thorough examination of the death dates of those listed within might narrow down the date further.
The Merchant's Bank of Prince Edward Island opened its doors on Water Street, Charlottetown Nov. 6 1871, closing after April 10, 1906 when a vote of the shareholders decided to sell it to the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. The Bank reopened under its new ownership June 2 1906.
