The Descendants of John Keefe and Mary Rowe

First Generation

1. John Keefe was born about 1803 in London, England. He died on 26 Jan 1892 in Alberton, Prince Edward Is, Canada. He was buried in Alberton, Prince Edward Is, Canada.

Said to have been born in St. Giles Parish, London. Came to PEI on a ship Captained by Richard Rowe; fell in love with Captain's daughter, Mary, and later married her. An English merchant John Hill bought 7,500 acres of land in 1788 from the original grantee of Lot 5, Edward Lewis, and settled 40 families on this land by 1820. A newspaper obit says Keeffe secured a large block of land, cleared it and eventually built a home called "Briarwood" one of the finest homes in the country". An article in The Island lists a John Keefe aged 22 in 1826 and a Mary Keefe aged 20, a Catherine Keefe age 2 and a John Keefe aged 1 year. (Fall/Winter 1990). Listed as 77 years and a farmer in the 1881 census living in lot 5. Sacred Heart Church Cemetery, Lot 5, Cemetery 4, Stone 147:

"John Keefe (1803-1892) was born in London, England of Irish parents. When he was fifteen, he came to Prince Edward Island with Captain Richard Rowe. Later he married Captain Rowe's daughter, Mary, and secured a large block of land from Colonel Hill in the Dock which he named 'Briarwood'. John and Mary Keefe were blessed with a family of twelve - John, James, Richard, Thomas, Peter, Edward, Joseph, Mary, Margaret, Catherine, Johanna and Anne. " Wandering Back - A History of Dock, Hills River, Mill River, Rosebank Published by the Three Rivers Historical Society in association with The New Horizon's Program of Health and Welfare Canada 1983 page 73

The Prince Edward Island Agriculturist

Vol. 10, No. 39,

January 30, 1892, page 5, col. 1

There passed quietly away at his home, Briarwood, Alberton, on Tuesday morning, of LaGrippe, one of the pioneers of western Prince County. Eighty-nine years ago, John Keefe was born in the great city of London, England, of Irish parents, and at the age of fifteen years he came out to this country with Col. Hill, after whom is called the beautiful river of that name which empties into Cascumpec Bay. Securing a large block of land near Alberton, he set about clearing this and making for himself a home. Being blessed with health and endowed with courage and industry, in a surprisingly short time broad fields with rich crops rewarded his labors, and Briarwood has long since been considered one of the finest homesteads of this country. Mr. Keefe was the father of a large family of boys and girls, and his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren are now occupying honorable positions in many places in the Dominion and United States. Until the very last moment he was possessed of a most accurate and retentive memory and the history of the province for the last seventy-four years he was able to recount in surprising detail. Few men in western Prince County were better and more favorably known than John Keefe, whose whole life was a striking vindication of the diction - "an honest man is the noblest work of God". On the Island he leaves four sons - Joseph, Richard, Thomas and Peter, - and two daughters to mourn their loss. His funeral took place Thursday evening and was very largely attended.

John married Mary Rowe daughter of Richard Rowe Captain and Mary Power in Alberton, PEI, Canada. Mary was born about 1807 in Newfoundland, Canada. She died on 16 Feb 1879 in Alberton, Prince Edward Is, Canada. She was buried in Alberton, Prince Edward Is, Canada.

Mary Rowe was the daughter of a Captain Richard Rowe and Mary Power, who brought John Keeffe to PEI about 1818, as part of John Hill's settlers. They fell in love and were married.
