The Descendants of Nathan Davies and Amelia McNutt
First Generation
1. Nathan Davies was born about 1781 in Pembrokeshire, Wales. He died on 18 Oct 1837. He was buried in Charlottetown, PEI (Old Protestant Cemetery, Elm Avenue).
Merchant and Shipbuilder in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.
Nathan Davies was the first member of the family to settle in Prince Edward Island. He was born in Pembrokeshire, South Wales in the early 1780s, probably at the family home of Pencoed,
Lawrenny. He was educated at home by his father but, when young, went to London to his uncle
George and commenced in his office as a lawyer. Not liking it, he was transferred to a merchants' firm and was subsequently sent to America in charge of merchandise. In 1809 he settled on Prince Edward Island. In 1832 Nathan's father, Benjamin Davies, died at the advanced age of 100. He had made a will 3 years before in which he left his son Nathan a shilling. The bequest of a token sum does not reflect any animosity between father and son, rather that Benjamin had little of value to leave to his children. His greatest asset was the leasehold of a farm (Pencoed) which he left to another son who had remained in Pembrokeshire.
Death of Nathan Davies, Col. Herald Sat Oct. 21, 1837: Died on Wednesday last, after a lingering illness which he bore with Christian fortitude and pious
resignation to the Divine will, Mr. Nathan Davies, Merchant of this town, in the 56th year of his age. During a period of nearly twenty-nine years residence in this Island, Mr. Davies had deservedly obtained the respect & esteem of all who knew him. He was an honest man - a faithful friend - a kind husband & tender parent.
The date of death of Nathan Davies is slightly uncertain. Separate information from T. W. Stewart states that on Oct 20th 1837 "Mr Nathan Davies died at Narbath North Wales, leaving a wife and 11 children, aged 57." However, it seems unlikely that Nathan died back in Pembrokeshire and I am inclined to believe that he died on 18th October 1837 in Charlottetown, especially as he is said to have been buried in Charlottetown.
Nathan married Amelia McNutt daughter of James McNutt and Penelope Stewart. Amelia was born on 17 Feb 1790 in Rustico, PEI. She was christened on 21 Jul 1790 in Charlottetown St Paul's (Anglican), PEI. She died on 30 May 1863. She was buried in Charlottetown, PEI (Old Protestant Cemetery, Elm Avenue).

Most melancholy Accident and Death:
It has never, we believe, fallen to the lot of a public journalist in this colony, to chronicle a more painful and melancholy occurrence, that that which it is our dut this day to record. We do not remember any event of a local character, which has cast such a gloom upon our little community, exciting sorrow so deep, so sincere, and so widely diffused. On Sat morning last, while the lady of Benjamin Davies, Esq, MPP, for Queen's Co., was engaged in superintending the baking of cake near the kitchen fire of her own residence - her servant being employed in another part of the house - and while in the act of lifting it from the fire, her back being partly turned to the burning logs, a light gown that she wore came in contact with the fire, which so rapidly ignited as to render her own efforts to extinguish it ineffectual. In the extremity of her alarm, she ran violently to her bedroom, up two flights of staris, where her screams brought ther servant to her assistance. The latter immediately snatched a double blanket from a bed and threw it round her, in the hope of smothering the flame; but Mrs Davies, becoming frantic with the pain of the burning, threw the servant off and rushing down staris and into the open street, made for the house of her Mr W Duchemin, immediately opposite her own redsidence, at the door of which she was met by Mrs Duchemin and her daughter by whose active exertions the fire was extinguished, although not, unhappily, until every particle of her clothing was entirely consumed, and almost every part of her body dreadfully burned. Medical relief was immediately obtained, but the unfortunate lady was too much injured by the fire to have any hope or chance of recovery. She lingered in great agony until about eight o'clock. This morning, when she was relieved from her sufferings by death.
Thus has fallen, in the bloom and vigor of life, by a calamity the most painful and afflicting to contemplate, a lady whose cheerful and agreeable disposition, and amiable deportment in every relation of life, rendered her generally esteemed - virtues which will cause her melancholy and premature death to be long and deeply deplored.

...Con weighed around 180 pounds at the time, and wasn't a bit bashful concerning his boxing
prowess, so one day he was a mite surprised when after a bit of self-praise, the Reverend Davies, who weighed about 130 pounds, announced that he would accommodate him for a few rounds. Of course, Con thought such a mismatch, as he felt it to be, was only a joke, but he finally agreed. The only witness to the bout was Skipper Randell Young, and he said that the movements of the Reverend Davies, who must have been around forty at the time, were a pleasure to behold, and that there was definitely no contest, as he completely outsmarted and out punched his much heavier and younger opponent.
